TuSimple said it has been cleared by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration concerning an April 6, 2022, incident in Tucson, Ariz., when one of its trucks struck a concrete barrier on Interstate 10, resulting in no injuries. TuSimple self-reported the incident to federal and state officials, stating that a human error occurred when two operators incorrectly re-engaged the autonomous driving mode without completing all necessary steps, causing the truck to scrape a median. The company cooperated with officials from FMCSA and NHTSA and no penalties were imposed.
“We prioritize safety at TuSimple,” said President and CEO Cheng Lu. “After the incident, we halted operations, launched an internal review, and collaborated with regulators. Our review resulted in additional improvements in our systems and testing operations. We are committed to [SAE Level 4] autonomous driving for longhaul heavy-duty trucks. We upgraded all of our systems with automated checks to prevent human error. During our second-quarter 2022 earnings call, we repeated our plans to commercialize operations without a safety driver. Last December, we completed an 80-mile driver-out demonstration in Arizona and have completed several more runs since.”
