The 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree recently completed a monumental 4,000-mile journey from the Tongass National Forest in Alaska to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. This annual tradition, celebrated for its commitment to community and collaboration, showcased the dedication of the trucking industry and its drivers.
A Scenic Start in Alaska
For the 11th consecutive year, Kenworth Trucks provided the vehicle for this iconic journey. This year’s tree was transported in a Kenworth T680, adorned with a custom wrap depicting the beauty of Alaska’s Tongass and Chugach National Forests. The Tongass National Forest, known as the largest national forest in the U.S., provided the majestic tree that will now stand as a centerpiece of holiday celebrations in the nation’s capital.
The responsibility of transporting the tree was entrusted to Lynden, a well-regarded Alaskan carrier. Lynden selected two veteran drivers, Fred Austin and John Schank, for the task. With over four decades of experience each, both drivers boast impeccable records, collectively amassing over 10 million accident-free miles. Schank, who previously transported the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree in 2015, brought his expertise to this year’s mission alongside Austin.
A Cross-Country Holiday Journey
The tree’s route spanned 11 states, making 13 stops along the way to connect communities with the spirit of the season. At each stop, the public had the opportunity to see the tree up close, celebrate local festivities, and learn about the tradition that began in 1970. This year, technology allowed for an added layer of engagement: the tree could be tracked in real time via an interactive map, allowing Americans to follow its progress from Alaska to Washington, D.C.
A Safe Arrival and Awaited Celebration
After thousands of miles and countless moments of holiday cheer shared along the route, the tree has arrived at its final destination, where it will be the centerpiece of a lighting ceremony on December 3. This annual event marks the culmination of months of planning, coordination, and execution by a diverse team of forestry professionals, transportation experts, and community leaders.
