Women in Trucking Driver of the Year nominations are open to qualifying female truckers through Jan. 29. A non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for gender equality in the freight transportation industry, the Women in Trucking Association (WIT) partners with Walmart to present a deserving female CDL professional with the award.
“At Walmart, we value creating a diverse and inclusive work environment. That’s why we’re committed to uplifting women in the transportation industry. We’re delighted and honored to be sponsoring the Driver of the Year award once again, in partnership with Women in Trucking,” Fernando Cortes, Walmart’s senior vice president of transportation, reportedly said. “Our female drivers are an indispensable part of our transportation team. By shining a spotlight on amazing achievements of female drivers, we’re hoping to inspire more women to embark on a career in trucking.”
Walmart’s fleet has made national news for its high pay and trucking opportunities. At the outset of 2023, the big box retailer employed upwards of 13,000 truck drivers in its private fleet. The company typically seeks out experienced truckers with at least 30 months of experience within a 4-year period.
For the fifth consecutive year, WIT and Walmart will issue the Driver of the Year award to a female driver who demonstrates industry-leading safety acumen while projecting a positive image of the trucking sector. Nominees must have, in some fashion, actively promoted trucking as a positive career choice that serves America’s needs.
“It’s a joy to celebrate and honor drivers each year through the Women In Trucking Driver of the Year award. Recognizing the value that female drivers bring to the trucking profession is a key mission of WIT, and we’re pleased to showcase their stories year after year,” WIT president and CEO Jennifer Hedrick reportedly said.
To qualify for the award, female truckers must meet the following criteria.
- Have safely driven at least one million consecutive, accident-free miles.
- Work as an owner-operator or company driver.
- Be nominated by the motor carrier by which she is currently leased or employed and must have three years of experience with that company.
- Provide a personal statement explaining in 250 words or fewer why they should be selected.
- Provide at least three letters of recommendation explaining in 250 words or less why the driver should be selected.
Finalists and the overall winner are scheduled to be honored during the 2024 Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event on March 22. To nominate a deserving female trucker, visit WIT Driver of the Year.
