For the past 11 years, Ellicott City, Md., volunteer Andrea Ciniero has helped less fortunate residents in an Appalachian town at Christmastime. But this year, her usual shipper said it wouldn’t be able to help out, putting the more-than-decade-long tradition at risk. The donated items are given to the Starting Points Family Resource Center in Crum, W.Va.
But after the drive’s dilema was featured in the local Howard County Times, and despite several calls offering help, Ciniero still hadn’t found a truck with a trailer of the needed size.
A long-distance call solved the long-haul problem. The Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) read of the trouble, and donated a truck and driver to make the yearly haul from Ellicott City to Crum. Charleston, S.C. trucker Bob Ruckman will make the 450-mile run, delivering to Starting Point Dec. 13.
“We noticed the article and thought there might be a possibility of identifying someone to help, knowing the charitable nature of small business truckers,” said spokeswoman Norita Taylor.
The receiver, Starting Points, provides donations and services to West Virginia families below poverty standards.
