J. B. Hunt Transport Services has signed a “far-reaching, multi-year contract agreement” with Norfolk Southern Railway, reports the Journal of Commerce. A trucking and intermodal transport giant, J. B. Hunt was one of the first to collaborate in truck-rail shipping, and is currently the largest provider of trucks for intermodal transport of goods. The company has a long-standing agreement with the western railway, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF).
Norfolk Southern beat out the competing CSX railway company for the deal. The trucking company says this partnership will help both entities establish themselves as “the leading providers of transcontinental and local intermodal service in the eastern half of the United States.”
The move provides incentives for each partner to increase revenue by removing a greater share of freight off the road and onto the rails, says Charles W. Moorman, who is chairman, president and CEO of the rail corporation.
J. B. Hunt’s intermodal operations are currently the company’s greatest source of revenue and operating profit. The company reported a third quarter revenue of $456 million, the journal article says, making up more than 50 percent of the quarter’s reported $834 million total revenue.
