On the same day U. S. Senators approved Anne Ferro as the new administrator of The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the safety boss garnered both praise from supporters and outrage – or silence – from detractors.
Ferro won the confirmation by unanimous vote, hurdling the final obstacle toward taking the helm at the FMCSA.
Ferro was president and CEO of the Maryland Motor Transport Association, a position which makes her “highly qualified for the position,” stated American Trucking Association’s Dave Osiecki, vice-president of safety, security and operations.
The administrative choice also found support from the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
OOIDA spokesperson, Norita Taylor, said Ferro’s experience will enable her to strike “a balance between safety and the realities of how truck transportation is provided.” Buzzy France, president of the CVSA, said Ferro understands “how government, law enforcement and industry need to work together to solve problems,” predicting she will be a “great advocate for safety.”
But not all industry groups approved the choice. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters opposed Ferro’s confirmation, and would not issue a statement about the appointment, an organization spokesperson said. The safety advocacy group Public Citizen, which brought suit against the FMCSA’s 2004 HOS rule changes, said it had not decided if the group would comment on the appointment. Both Teamsters and Public Citizen opposed Ferro, who supported the regulation changes during her term at the MMTA.
