Cliff notes: you want a job that requires time in to earn the wage you want with the desired start times you want, and the desired workload you want.

4 options, but can only pick three:

    Moderate to high starting pay
    Day shift
    Not foodservice
    No pain of seniority growth

Do your own research if you’re going to make condescending replies to the people you are asking free advice from and you don’t like their answers.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any disrespect. It’s always a challenge when posting on a forum to convey the proper tone.

    FlaSwampRat and McUzi Thank this.

i can't speak for any other LTL's besides UPSF. It really depends on the terminal; i rarely work the dock. i did last tuesday, because they were short on dockpersons and i wanted to get my trailers loaded and i wanted to get the hell out of the hub asap. But i rarely, only on special occasions, work the dock---like if a niteliner goes on vacation or calls in sick. And even then i might be able to bump it down to the poor lower seniority man :)

Dockwork is really not a big deal to me. Most larger LTL companies have mostly palletized freight---so you're on a forklift the majority of the time. i just don't like to do dockwork in the middle of the night---then hookup doubles and race home to your terminal.

We have what's called Dock/cdl combos and those jokers make the BIG $$$$-----because they get the hours. Like 87-100K

You may want to ask the terminal manager AND drivers at the specific terminal at the company you want to work for.

i don't know if these companies are in Houston, but i saw an ad for Costco today:

    It said:
    Home daily
    All TL drop and hook
    401K and other benefits
Forgot what the starting pay was but i think $22

i will try to find a link and post.

    Bunzl is similar.

I’ve done dock work a total of once in the nearly 15 years I’ve been with my company, and that was 10 years ago a monday after getting buried under enough snow to shut linehaul down. The few city guys that could make it in including myself cleaned up what we could. I loaded 2 pups for Richmond and after we dug the trucks out I left with that.

I have no interest in doing food service or ltl , but from what I'm hearing is that it's fairly competitive to get into either of those ?

@eightballwoody here is the starting pay at some of the LTLs in the houston area.

    City P&D
Old Dominion=$25.00 dls an hour you will get a raise every 6 months til you hit top pay at 3 years, Overtime after 60 hours.

Estes=$25.90 dls an hour you will get raise every six months til you hit top pay, Overtime after 52 hours.

AAA Cooper= it depends on your experience from what I been told if you do come with experience you will get hired at a top pay which I believe its around $26dls and some change, no overtime.

Averitt starting pay is 21.50 and you will get a raise every 6 months til you hit top pay will be at 28.50, no overtime.

R&L starting pay is 20 dls and you will not get a raise til 3 years later which will put you at a top pay, no overtime.

Southeastern starting pay is $25.00 dls with raises every 6 months til you hit top pay, no overtime.

I hope this helps ya narrow which of these outfits you want to put your app in. @Radman hopefully he Chimes in about pay at saia, @Fuelinmyveins works for fedex as a city P&D if im not mistaken so hopefully he can chime in as well in regards to pay.

    Good luck.
