My uncle told me a great story (well, lots of 'em but I really like this one.)
He was driving for Baggett I believe and got a load that was for the government. He was not allowed in the hanger when the truck was being loaded/unloaded. The slip had no info about the load. He was told to bypass the scales and he could stop wherever he wanted but "we're going to be following you." He said whatever he was hauling hardly weighed a thing and when he stopped at a truckstop, he pulled right up front. The group following him consisted of four men in black suits, driving a black car. Whenever my uncle stopped, the four men got out, guns in plain sight, and stationed themselves at each corner of the truck. They stayed that way while he ate, showered or whatever till he was ready to pull out.
He never did find out what he hauled.
Hauling the unknown load

Pure B.S! That's not how those loads are handled. I've heard that story before from truckstop commandos that want to impress you with lies about all the "cool" stuff they've done.
It's just a truckdriver story. -
The black suits thing is pure BS,back in the late 80's and early 90's(Desert Storm) Government Escorts were white vans with 1-2 US Marshals or Private Contractors.
We hauled many secretive loads described only with UN #'s and gross weight.
They would advise as to what placards (if needed)to post and off we went.Escorts were rare, but generally involved entering high population areas.
Sometimes we would be advised where to expect an escort and other times they showed unannounced.
Getting on Manhattan Island was a total cluster with Fire,State and Local LEO
.Exaggerated and Very time consuming, never knew what was in the wagon other then 1.4 ?
Some want to make it sound as if its "BIGGER THEN LIFE" (some loads were pretty close) but for the most part everything was very low profile as it should be.
Ive been "places" and seen "things",in the end it was a completed load and another settlement check in the mail. -
Just like the story of pingpong balls and the scalehouse.

My Uncle is a Ghost Driver, It is true that you don't have to scale, But they do tell you where to stop, You need to have a truck that is specifically marked so that the Police know not to pull you over, These companies contract for secure loads only. You need to have a security clearance. The men that follow you for the most part are in Black SUVs or some of the old ones are white. Some times there is a Helicopter escort, Most of the drivers are Team drivers, that way the loads don't sit.
BiLLee Thanks this. -
sorry , I didn't know.
All I know is it sounded like a good story and this was probably
more like in the late 60's or early 70's.
Sorry again
