Forgive me, I dont know what I dont know.

Id like to pull my hotshot trailer with an old 1994 FLD 60series or similar. I my haul spans from alaska to oregon, and sometimes california once or twice a year.

I am not for hire, and only haul my own equipment back up to AK.

Im concerned that my old truck will get me sidelined if I have to got to california. Am I exempt if I am hauling my own load?

I would suggest calling and asking a CDOT officer, they’ll usually help, I called a MoDOT on a question about covid exemption I get in their state right now, they’ll usually explain what you need

So all those companies need to be put out of business too?
    Especially ports and Railroad trucks.

The key phrase to remember here is "in furtherance of a business". Even if you're hauling your own product and not hauling for anyone else you're still operating in furtherance of a business.
Private fleets know this and some of them had to find out the hard way.

i don't know, I would think that California can't demand foreign vehicles, meaning from other states, have specialized equipment that isn't required in their home state. That has (not being political) to do with the interstate commerce clause. I do know rail roads are pretty much off limits when it comes to travel between states, this is a very well established fact. Ports should be also federal, but I don't know much about maritime law.

Nevertheless, the op is running a '94 fl60 which is a class 7 truck, not a pickup and it is used for commercial purposes so unfortunately it is covered by CARB, although unconstitutionally.

The Truck I am considering is actually an FLD120 class 8.

I just got off the phone with the CARB compliance people. Woman I spoke to said EVERY SINGLE diesel engine operating on road in the state for any reason has to be equipped with a 2010 or neweer engine. Which is contradictory to what Ive researched so far. I asked her to send or reference a reg number I could look at, and she has yet to send it. SO, Im stuck either relying on her word or calling again.

    EDIT:
I recieved her email. The reg she sent doesnt support what she said at all. Im going to call again. this is rediculous.

All that says is they won’t allow you to register your old vehicles. It says nothing about out of state vehicles already registered in another state.
