Exactly. Being up front will do you better than anything else when starting out. A good record and actually being able to drive will get you into some places.
Generally the insurance is what dictates the requirements. Some companies have better policies than others that allow them to hire with less experience. A team drive situation which isn't for everyone is usually the kind of place you'll be able to work at with less experience.
If you want to get into flatbed try maverick. Explain what's going on and that you are trying to have a plan in place. They'll pay for schooling if they deem you don't have the necessary experience. And they'll train you on load securement. May not be the best option but it's a stepping stone.

I would actually prefer someone who is actively looking to better their situation and is honest about it.
All the better that you are not jobless and are currently driving if you ask me! Hunt for better!
A lot of companies are self insured and can care less about what some insurance company thinks is OK. -
Thanks, Meech. I was just "spitballing", I knew that someone would come along with the straight scoop.
I can't help it.........I'm a Militant Tanker Activist!
I get treated nicely by our customers, for the most part. I would THINK, and I may be wrong, that even tankers from Schneider would be treated better than the van jocks.
One of the beer plants I go to gets a chemical delivery from Schneider.
If the sugar truck is unloading, he has to wait.
According to the receiver, the Schneider driver was so butt hurt over having to wait, that the customer revamped the unloading schedule, and changed the direction of travel in the unloading bays.
So if Schneider is there, and me and the yeast guy show up at the same time, one of us has to wait. Customer choice.
And I'll gladly sit and play on my phone indefinitely for $18 an hour.
Yeah, it's a little low compared to other tanker companies, but I get every penny of it, every time, without any flak.meechyaboy Thanks this. -
That guy was probably on the ecolab dedicated account like I was my last few months which is a great account I can’t remember what the pay was for going over 2 hours but the account never had set appointments more like windows so there was some technicality that it didn’t start until you started unloading or something but I can’t recall.. the problem with their tanker division outside of dedicated accounts was a lack of freight..like if they sent you east and you arrived at the wash Thursday night you’re probably sitting the whole weekend.. which you say “ I get paid overlay to sit” and I say 65$ a day is garbage sitting in a tankwash away from home(on top of them not wanting to put it on unless it’s a full 24 hours).. that’s less than what they pay for training at 80$ a day...Updating your next available time- the way they assign preassignments is kinda wonky too..and it switch to a auto update when they put the tablets in so if you say you’re done in 3 hours with x on your clock the computer will tell you no and automatically update it to what it feels like.. their tanker training is A1 though.
I’m 100% with you on being a tanker activist... I’ve driving them since day one and more then likely retire in one.. -
The grass isn't greener esp when it's only a lateral move. Move up not side to side it'll always be the same toilet just diff bs

Try Britton Transport if you're in their hiring area. They have van/reefer and flatbed.

Don't worry, it gets better. Just keep your ears open for opportunity

I got you beat, 87 hours 38 minutes outside the gate parked in a wide spot beside their gate, no restrooms, had food.
When I had to go, I drive 6 miles to the TA, then came back, it’s my truck and trailer, but facility was full.
Supposed to pay, but it’s a 30 day note, so we’re like 2 weeks in, gotta wait 2 more weeks and probably have to fight for mine, $2,200 in detention on a $2,195/load.meechyaboy and homeskillet Thank this. -
Only problem with that is the company charges you $7,000 for something that you can buy for $1,800-3000 on your own . Charging $7 grand for something that costs $1,800 on the open market, It might as well be a buy here pay here used car lot.plankton, LtlAnonymous and meechyaboy Thank this.
