Recently bought a truck that somehow developed a lot of blow by on the way back to the garage (wasn't noticeable when I bought it) and now I'm stuck trying to figure out what to do. Should I fix the current engine that's in it, or repower the truck to use an ISL, or just buy the same type of engine. It also has an EGR which may be contributing to the issue.

What are my options and how pricy am I looking at here?

    How many miles on engine/truck.
Have you not spent a ton on it, and plan to keep it?
Rebuild kits aren’t that expensive, it’s the labor that’ll get you, so are there good shops in your area that’ll rebuild it, not for 150-175/hour?
I used a shop that was 95/hour on a Cummins rebuild.

A rebuild kit will vary, usually 2500-5000 depending on engine and what all is needed, personally I change water pump and oil pump too, just incase.
Depends on if you need new head, around 3k.

Detroits are generally cheaper to rebuild than anything else. Plus being a 4 banger you'd have 2 less cylinders to worry about.

640k miles on the engine. I am planning on keeping it since I want to use it for yard work and maybe local distance driving.

How long do shops take normally to take the engine out and rebuild it? I want to make sure I'm not getting a run of my money since last time my mechanic purposely took his sweet time and caught him admitting it on the dashcam. Made it pay an extra $500 smh.

Shouldn’t need an rebuild with that mileage..
I had an inframe done on a Isx Cummins, was 23k.
    Labor and all parts.
But it had 1 million 76k miles.

Could just be excessive wear around piston rings.
Maybe try something like this first.
Blowby in trucks... Does it mean a rebuild?

23k for an ISX rebuild?? Sheesh! That's why I tend to stick to the older diesels. Less money and more reliability.

Go by oil consumption not blow by on a series 50/60 . I’ve had low mileage engines that developed blow by around 8,000 miles into oil change but only needed to add oil at the 12 k that we changed oil at . They went well over a million miles before oil consumption got to 1 gallon at 2500 miles.

I see. I will eventually replace the engine since the last company that had it ran it into the ground, but I want to get as much out of it as I can.

Make sure it is not the turbo.
Truck engine are often in frame over hauled. About 50 hours.

This engine requires it to be taken out cause of the frame.
