You have to have 0 business sense to be going broke in this business. Even at $2/mile you can stay afloat.
Driver has an incentive to run shorter loads if he gets paid almost the same as longer ones. I usually prefer 300 miles paying me $1700 than 500-600 miles paying $2000. But with per mile pay all he would care is getting more miles.
Owner op paid per mile.

That’s why you put a minimum in place no matter how many miles are ran or not, then cents per mile on top.
You sound like someone who has never owned trucks during hard times. But, who knows you may be the next big fleet owner. Hope you continue doing well for a long time. -
You sound like you have everything figured out. Do you own trucks, company?
-
Yes, lots of them. Also owner ops, warehouse, brokerage. I learn more everyday. I have however been around the block. That’s for sure. Of course things seem easy now but it’s not always like that. I started out in 2008 and soon the economy crashed. I thought I was unlucky but turns out I think it’s better to start out when things are crap. IMO.
There have been many more ups and downs since then. Just the way it goes.Brettj3876 and TallJoe Thank this. -
That's what I always tell people and I get blasted for it on here.. maybe not pull the trigger but certainly run the numbers and see if you could survive.blairandgretchen and Midwest Trucker Thank this.

Judging by your dot# you haven’t been around in the lean times yet. Wait until this high diminishes and see where things are at, you are in for a rude awakening and your happy driver making lots of money is going to go elsewhere when his paycheck suffers.Brettj3876 and Midwest Trucker Thank this.

I agree - I started 2015, wasn’t a strong year, but by the time things turned around, I had learned how to tread water if needed.Brettj3876, TallJoe, mudflap77 and 1 other person Thank this.

When will "this high diminish"?
-
If you could make that kind of prediction, you wouldn't be sitting in a truck.JoeyJunk and Brettj3876 Thank this.

The highs are no longer than 18-24 months...from what I was able to memorize. We are in the 15th month already.
There is still some time left...People are waiting on parts and trailers...
However, you must know one thing...there is never dark sky before the storm here. Your average 3 dol per mile will turn 1.5 with a blink of an eye. Just like that...over night from Tuesday to Wednesday...in some time.JoeyJunk and Brettj3876 Thank this.
