I got my CDL in 2016 and drove bulk OTR for Schneider until March 2018, followed by doing a local spotter/shuttle gig until July 2019. I haven’t driven commercially since then and I’m looking to get back in the truck. Here are the details of my situation and my question:
In the first few months of my first job, I hit a trailer fender in the yard of a tank wash and scraped up the hood of my power unit. No citations, just a please don’t do that again by Schneider. Then about a year in I backed over a railroad crossing post. I know. I’m sorry. Again, no ticket, no fine (had one of those subscription lawyers get it thrown out). Again, Schneider let it go. I think they gadget me a write up, but they kept me on.
When I changed jobs, for better paying local work, I grazed a chain link fence in 2018 because I’m an idiot and decided to wipe the windshield fog (defroster in spotter truck was broken) while moving about 5 mph and drifted to the right a bit. Again, I know. I do. I deserve whatever you’re going to say to me about it, so, no worries, I have thick skin.
Finally, I got terminated from that job for a service failure in which I shuttled the wrong trailer to the wrong door. They unloaded the wrong product and had to spend time reloading it to get it to the right place. Service failure is, in writing, an automatically fireable offense, and so they did. That was two years ago.
It shook my confidence and I wasn’t sure if I belonged in a truck. I started door dashing and ubering to cover the gap in my income, found out I could make good money doing it, and have been doing it full time ever since.

The money has begun to dry up and I’m destroying my car putting 150 miles a day 6 days a week on it. I really miss being on the road and I believe I’ve learned some critical lessons about how important attention to detail and not taking shortcuts are to commercial driving. So here’s my question:

What, knowing my short history as a driver, should I tell recruiters and put on the applications and what should I shut up about? I know I have to tell them I was fired. Am I shooting myself in the foot telling them about non-DOT reportable accidents? Or will that come up and they’ll find out anyway? Should I shoot for 100% transparency and hope for the best? Thank you in advance.

100% transparency. BUT only answer the questions asked and never volunteer anything.
For example you were let go for a policy violation.
If they ask for any wrecks, list all of them. If they ask for all at fault wrecks just those. If they ask for dot recordable wrecks, list them, etc. (btw, I've never seen anyone ask for that.)

Here's the deal. Any place that is going to hire you has to do several things by law. The must check the clearinghouse. They must check all employers in the last 10 years, and the previous employers must list all drug and safety violations. Also, while not the law, they will also give your name to their insurance company which will show any insurance payout associated with your name. This is what gets most people as they have had wrecks that was an insurance claim, but they never got hit on with their MVR or PSP.

That said, your hardest hurdle is no driving experience in over a year. Likely you will have to start over as if you don't have any experience.
Put in applications and see where that goes. There are jobs out there for you.
Have you contacted Schenider back? Anything that happened there will have dropped off your 3 year report so they very likely be willing to take you back if you didn't mind the work.

Check your DAC report www.hireright.com. Some of that minor crap probably isn't even on there.
Just list tickets you were convicted on and anything on your DAC report and the firing.
Most companies don't even want you to list anything that happened within the last 2 or 3 years, unless it's a DUI or 15 over speed limit or fatality wreck.

You can order a copy of your DAC online (can't remember where, but shouldn't be hard to Google it) and see exactly what shows up. That's exactly what I would volunteer up front. Beyond that, I would say that is up to you and depending on if you're using the old companies as references.

    Man o man.
    1) This sounds sound worse than what it is, contact your school you went to. Ask them what you need to do to get a refresher course.
    2) as mentioned above get your dac report and see what's on it.
    3) mold your storey so it don't sound so bad and matches your Dac report.
    4) apply at jobs that accept x amount of time in the last years. It will say like experiance needed 12 months in the last 36.
    5) during the phone interview bring up you are able to do a 40 to 160 hour refresher course.( different companies will differ)
    6) START PAYING ATTENTION TO WHATS AROUND YOU.
And good luck. Your storey sounds bad. But I still got you beat and I'm out here.

Your giving good advise. The 15 mph as a employee is a problem. As a owner op, still not good. My insurance just said "don't get another for awhile". 2nd speed ticket in my life, almost 20 years apart. Its not a death sentence when you have a reasonable record.

When he gets his Hireright report, then lets us know where he's located, we'll help him get started with a good company.
