I would welcome an app. That way we know for sure the company didn't upload it. (Snark)

Tennessee is one for sure that I know of where - the regs state "Electronic Copy OK!" - Get into the scale house - different story. As per DC, a buddy. He had paper copy anyhow.

I ALWAYS print OS/OD permits, read and comply.

My fear with a push to electronic - nobody would read THE PERMIT.

There is definitely some truth to that statement. If permit books could be updated in the back office instantly without requiring the driver to come in, would that make life easier for everyone though? I could see it being more of an issue for large fleets with dozens or hundreds of permits books to manage

That is a great point! An app would put the management and issuance of permits on the company vs the driver. Drivers have enough things to worry about in their day to day

Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate hearing the real world experience. It's one thing for state regulations to say it and another for it to occur in practice. I've spoken to some drivers who carry both a digital copy and a paper copy as back up.. at least until it's more widely accepted.

I had no idea a simple permit book was such a devastating issue that once a year for about 5 whole minutes someone has to change out a few pieces of paper!:(
I can only guess how much money is going to be made by a couple of software companies?

Wrong. Checking your paperwork or permit book is part of your pretrip. That still falls on the driver. Just because some office person forgot to upload the documents in digital form, it’s still the drivers responsibility to make sure it’s all there before driving. Showing a pretrip with no issues without said paperwork up to date and the driver is getting improper pretrip fine. In Ontario, that’s $400.

I hear ya! In your experience do many of the permits you have in your permit book need to be updated throughout the year? I know there are the typically renewals required at the end of the calendar year (UCR, IFTA, New Mexico permits, etc) but do you personally track the validity of permits that expire throughout the year to ensure they are renewed on time?

Understood, thanks for that feedback. That is a hefty fine!

So you review your permit book every pre-trip to ensure all permits are a) present and b) valid?
