Howdy, I posted about this before. truck sputtered and died. I replaced fuel filters and used some ether and thought it was fixed. I got about 150 miles down the road driving at hwy speed and it shuttered as if getting no fuel a couple of times and died and will not crank. What I have done so far in chronological order………
- replaced all the fuel lines in the engine bay
- replaced the two sensors by the compressor
- inspected check valve. (When removed, it held fuel in the top but didn’t run through the bottom so I assumed it is working correctly.
- replaced fuel filters
- replaced fuel pump.
I also tried to start the truck from the fuel pump in-line connected to a bucket of diesel.
Someone suggested checking ecm fuse. I can’t seem to locate it. The wires to the ecm appear intact. When I turn key to the on position the dash lights come on and then go off after it cycles. I’m stumped at this point.

It’s a freightliner classic xl btw if that matters
Rideandrepair and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Should be a pile of info about that in the search block. Top right.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
have seen this happen twice with different trucks. first was an obstruction on the pickup tube in the tank and the second was a bad ecm. first one blew the line backwards and it worked fine after that

Has it got a 'diagnostic switch' - often paired with an engine shutdown over-ride? I've got same engine but 1995 Pete - when you push the diagnostic momentary switch, it'll pulse a morse code style light flash between SEL and CEL to convert to a 2 digit number as a code if it is throwing one.
@race27 's suggestion of obstruction to pickup.
Replace the check valve just in case.
When you find the ECM fuse - replace it anyway, I've seen them where they look and test fine, but are very finely cracked, only shows up with a multimeter.
@Goodysnap @pushbroomRideandrepair, cke, baha and 3 others Thank this. -
Have you checked voltage? Ecm needs 11.1 volts to turn on.
Rideandrepair, cke, RubyEagle and 1 other person Thank this. -
Good point. Are you thinking maybe batteries not charging - bad alternator and batteries - truck loses voltage - ECM shuts down?Rideandrepair and cke Thank this.

I’m thinking when i ran the fuel line from the pump to a fuel bucket it would bypass any issues with the tank, but it still didn’t start.
I don’t think it has a diagnostic switch. I have seen the engine light flash if there was an issue, but it hasn’t done that in awhile.
I will go ahead and replace the valve. would the ecm fuse be anywhere besides the battery box?
It’s showing about 10 volts on the gauge. It rolls over like there is plenty of power and wants to start with ether but will die back out. Would it do that and still not get enough voltage to the ecm?Rideandrepair and jamespmack Thank this. -
10V on the gauge is no bueno. Have you hit it with a multimeter to check against gauge? Before cranking should be about 12v - and while running 13.6-14.2V with healthy alternator.
Dino soar, cke, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this. -
No I haven’t used a multimeter with it. I thought if it was rolling over it had the power needed, but I will try to jumpstart it in the morning. I’m definitely not a mechanic lol but I want to learn as much as possible about this truck.
blairandgretchen Thanks this.
