Just graduated from CDL school yesterday, been really nervous about finding a job because I have pretty inconsistent work history.

It’s not that I was a bad employee or ever got into any trouble, I always showed up on time, worked hard, & applied myself. I just job hopped a lot straight out of high school either because i didn’t know what I wanted to do, I just didn’t like the job, found a better opportunity at the time, or I relocated.

I’m 23, I have no criminal history, no accidents, never done any drugs, & I’ve only ever gotten one speeding ticket back in early 2019(which was reduced to misuse of equipment).

I guess my question is if bad work history is a grave sin & will be in the way of me getting a good job or if/how they even show up in my record(considering I went to a couple jobs for only a day or two)?

Congratulations, you earned your CDL. Less than 10% of driving jobs will hire a new driver with no experience. Your first year or so is about paying your dues - learning how to back the truck, manage your clock and other things. Starter companies aren't that picky because they have a 92% turnover rate for drivers anyway. Most starter companies won't have an issue with your day jobbing. Prime will, but they're picky. Stick with your first company for at least a year with a clean record (tickets, incidents and accidents) and you will have a plenty of options.

You'll be able to find a driving job.

My suggestion is: get your HM, Tanker and Doubles/Triples endorsements, get a TWIC. These make it look like you're serious about it, even if you never use them.

Remember, in this industry, the first year or two can sort of make or break you, so do your best to stop the job jumping thing. And driving trucks isn't all strawberries and orgasms, so be prepared to tough it out for a couple of years, in order to establish yourself as a safe, reliable driver.

    Luck to ya.

Really the only company they threw at us was Werner. I wouldn’t necessarily mind going with them but just wanted to know all my options before making a decision, especially because I do want to stop my job hopping & stick with my new company for a while.

Since you are young and your job history isn’t driving it most likely won’t matter to many companies, especially since they are hurting for drivers. Just my opinion.

I agree with others that you’ll find a job no problem. You don’t have any issues besides short duration jobs. The clean records you have is more important.

Just keep in mind that you can make good money in this industry in a year or two if you; don’t job hop, don’t get accidents and incidents, don’t rack up violations. With those you can still work, but without them, you’ll be getting big money offers while others wonder why trucking pay is so low.

Why have you now chosen trucking?

Are you prepared to endeavor and persevere into developing into a career trucker?

    It won't be easy.

I understand, I’ve been interested in trucking for a few years now.

I did imagine that it can be a difficult career so I never really perused it until last year, a lot has changed since a few years ago, I’d like to think I’ve matured a lot, I’ve learned so much, & have set clear goals for myself.

I can’t say for sure that I am prepared, I know it won’t be easy, there’s still a lot I don’t know & I am a bit nervous, but I’m ready to work hard to reach my goals.
