variable speed limit in Caldwell ID construction zone

    Credit where credit is due: Idaho's traffic engineers deserve a big round of applause for figuring out an easy way to avoid slapping a blanket 55 mph 24/7 through this medium-sized construction zone. Not only is traffic allowed to continue at 65 mph when there is no work going on, by posting an abundance of electronic signs, they also gave themselves the option to only reduce the speed limit where the work happens to be located within the zone (this option gets used routinely).

    Another innovative construction sign I love is "use both lanes to merge point." The first place I ever saw it was in Pennsylvania decades ago.

    The inventors of these traffic control methods deserve nice bonuses.

    I can tell you that at one time our only source of any extra money was working construction zones on our days off. The company doing the work paid us. Eventually the state put a stop to it. While we were working we were too busy working problem areas and couldn’t really make time for them.
