60 series engine calibration

100k is the rule on a 12.7 The price is dependent on who does it and where.

 

Probably a very subjective answer depending on who you talk to.

 

I've seen engines with 500k and nary once an overhead, and those every 100k. IMO, the 60 Series adjustments are very critical. You're not blowing money (if done right) at 100k.

I promise, at 100k miles you won't be able to slip most any feeler gauge under the intake valve adjusting screw, much less the .008, so it's definitely not a bad idea sooner. Pretty sure Detroit specd 200k way back, but I may be misremembering.

 

I'd probably do as @Banker posts suggests

 

First overhead should’ve already been done then it’s up to owner if he wants to do it yearly or mileage based.. myself I had it done when I started losing fuel mpg or power but never longer than 2 years .

 

My mechanic concurs with this.

Darn. I run Detroit Overheads for 400-450 with the gasket and thought that was easy money. I am pretty much retired now but when someone with a Detroit 60 series wants an overhead done I jump on it. Maybe I have been charging too little?!?!?! Oh well good money for me. I think the book says 100k or if noticeable change in fuel or power. That is what I suggest. I for sure would not go longer than this. Detroit intake start getting tight. Plus if you don't keep them adjusted it will start wearing out your adjusters.
