So just want to know what you guys think I'm a flatbed driver I haul pipe split axle trailer with a peterbilt 579 sleeper tractpr. I recently slid the 5th wheel all the way back ( before it was second to last hole) I figured it will give me better turning and uturn capabilities without worrying about hitting the tractor I'm in nj ny md pa de area I do good amount of city driving and I at times have to go into tight spots make tight turns and some unavoidable uturns. So will having it all the way back effect my turning or backing ? what about winter driving if i'm too light on my steers?? again before it was in second to last so I believe i wont feel a difference at all the truck is in the shop now for maintenance so i'm just analyzing on down time lol maybe i'm just overthinking this
5th wheel all the way back or not? flatbed

Split axle? Do you mean a spread?
How heavy are you usually running? With the 5th wheel all the way to the rear, there is always a potential of not being able to scale a load. -
I run with mine all the way to the rear nearly all the time. Thing is, you need to know your weight on the axles. EMPTY! Then you can decide. As for turning, u-turns and such, the difference between all the way back vs 2 holes up is about 6". You'll never notice.
Brettj3876, D.Tibbitt and kylefitzy Thank this. -
I would set it where the truck floats down the road.

All the way back is where all the cool kids run their fifth wheel. And I mean ALL the way back.
