    Hey folks,

Anyone come across a situation where you do orientation with a career, but then find out they lied and your not interested in working for them? Do they have to pay you for your time while you were there for orientation (was there for 5 days and was out of town).

Thanks for any thoughts or reflections.

    Cheers

Could be on your own, including getting back home, they probably paid to get you there.

Yes, they paid to get me there ... but I was referring more to the time that I spent there. So, five days at 8hrs a day -- do they need to compensate that time? Or is it like everything else, we just work for free?

    Cheers

Why did it take 5 days before you realized you were no longer interested?I don't see why they would have to pay you since you never took the job.

A couple reasons 1. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt and 2. It was on the fifth day where the truth came out. I was led to believe something different.

Second, your reply is interesting as you automatically assume it is my fault -- is there a reason for that? Or are you just not wanting to be helpful?

You were employed, so I would think they owe you the pay, unless you signed a contract?

Really it depends on the companies pay structure.
    Is orientation typically paid?

Some companies pay, some don't. You are exempt from just about all labor payment laws, so there is really little one can do if they normally don't pay, or if they have a policy of owing them money if you quit before x days. And by policy, I mean something you signed in all the orientation paperwork.

What comapny? That may help us answer the question if some other person has worked for them.

Okay, I'll play along. You have seen and read his contract i assume?
Can you recite the words in his contract saying that.
    Thanks

I've been trucking for 25 years in 3 different countries and I've never signed a "contract" as a company driver.

You think a "contract" makes Canadian laws obsolete?

He never even mentioned a "contract"
