    My wife and I have spent a total of a month in NZ over the course of two trips. We were hoping to see a kiwi, but we learned that is a fool's errand, since they are rare and nocturnal.

    We did eventually see one in captivity, but only barely, due to the enclosure being kept dark. It was running around with reckless abandon.

    We did see a weka, though.
