Figured as a percentage of gross, what do you consider an acceptable profit margin?

50% is legit if you keep your costs down. But this market wont allow 50%. In a correct market loads should be $3 and fuel should be .50. But in this market loads are $2 and fuel is $1.

    3.00 a mile with.50 a gallon fuel? You funny.
And if you can’t make money with 2.00 a mile freight and 1.00 a gallon fuel you are in the wrong business.

I am referring to per mile. You are just feeling the Cabal making a move. Funny what they can do to own all of trucking.

It is a rule of thumb - or some recurring statistical phenomenon - that a solo owner operator gets to keep half of their gross.
At least this seems to be the case for me, ever since I got my own authority.
Of course, it was more in 7/2020 - 3/2022 boom period. But the rule was noticeable in the previous years as well as the recent months.

For example, from $200 000 of all revenue, I expect to retain $100 000.
If you wanted to determine precise business profit as reported on K-1 Schedule, I'd have to substruct my own W-2 reported pay.
But as long as I am encompassing both entities: business and me as an employee, I consider all the monies to be at my own exclusive disposal. Therefore, for all practical purposes, the 50% as an outcome of a statistical phenomenon, can be seen as my total net profit.

Perhaps, this is one of those universal laws of numbers, encoded somewhere in Cosmic time-space, that makes this rule applicable to solo owner operator's operating under their own authority.

I think, whenever I touched on the subject, enough members agreed and reported the same observations, do that I believe it to be an universal law.

The Cabal? Conspiracy theories belong in the Politics section and any reference to them should go there.

That’s an important figure in a lot of respects.

Over 8 years, it’s ranged from 45-70%, but I’ll have to look back. Single truck, 2 trailers, ranging from moderate investment to fully paid for.
