Tons of drivers make a living wage. I know people in tons of other fields such as nursing or teaching that make less than what I do. Bright side is I had no student debt when I got into the industry. I started at one of the megas, and yeah it sucked for the first year. But I put my head down and did my job. Kept my record clean, got all my endorsements, and the opportunities started rolling in.
You gotta learn how to finance and live within your means. Yeah sorry no you are probably not buying a McMansion in whatever ritzy suburb you live nearby or buying a fancy new car all the time. And sometimes you gotta put up with the bs in the industry. Every profession has one in some way or the other.Old_n_gray, The Railsplitter, Short Fuse EOD and 2 others Thank this. -
I was going to defend the OP as I think at least some of the things he complained about have merit, but I just happened to stumble into the Oilfield section of the forum tonight after reading this thread first.
OP is working 35-38 hours per week, grossing $70,000 per year on a W2 salary doing a dedicated OTR run that's either a dry van or reefer gig, or possibly both (he said in the linked thread below in his OP that he has 3.5 years experience doing reefer and dry van).
I can understand about making the argument that 70k is not a fair wage for 70 hour work weeks and living out of the truck (despite that being around the average or slightly better than the average OTR yearly salary).
But to complain about grossing 70k for LESS THAN 40 HOURS OF WORK PER WEEK?!
70000 / 38 = $35.43.
70000/35 = $38.46
That is your hourly wage for doing non specialized Truckload freight. $35.43 - $38.46 per hour.
Yeah, I'm sorry, you have it made and have zero reasons to complain. You are completely out of touch with reality. If I were you, I would do everything in your power to keep the current job that you have as long as you're staying OTR, because I promise you it doesn't get any better than that. Thank the lucky stars that you found the needle in the haystack OTR job and don't ever do anything to screw it up.
Considering going to texas to haul sand as a company driver.Last edited: Feb 8, 2023

You nailed it spot on. Our society today has some of the richest poor broke people I've ever seen. Most have way cooler toys and gadgets than I.The Railsplitter, Jubal Early Times and Rubber duck kw Thank this.

This i can actually agree with. I had a hell of a time going back and forth with dumb ####s at bank giving them documentation numerous times on mortgage of a $450k. Questioning how I planned on 15% down-payment closing etc. Funding was going to be wired from a non retirement index fund. 823 credit score, $118k/year income, no revolving credit debt, no car loan, or any other consumer debt.

Just curious what this new hot interweb term "McMansion" means. Is it something you get at MacDonald's?
