It's an old trick. I had it played on me over 20 years ago by USA Truck when they were losing drivers to the JB Hunt
..37 to .41 cpm gold rush of the late 90's/ early 00's.
In order to compete with their Arkansas neighbors to the north, USA hired a bunch of hands on at .37 to .43. That was decent money back then.
A few months after they hired all the drivers they needed, I got a message to call my dispatcher to discuss the new pay package. "Another raise, this is fantastic !" I exclaimed to myself as I rushed to the payphone to hear about it.
But it wasn't a raise, it was a take it or leave it pay cut. The party was over.
Company wants me to take a pay decrease

If I were you I would stay put until you can explore all your options, unless you see an impending company shutdown on the horizon. You may eventually find something much better or you may stay put and eventually the pay will come back.

Years ago I was a field tech for Wang global. Now qualxserv or probably even something different by now. I had to sign one which equated to a 200 monthly loss. I was mad but I was young and I enjoyed the work. In hindsight I would have never signed it and told them the balls in your court.

I like how the upper pay scale takes a bigger cut than the lower pay scale. It’s like more of this country’s reduction of the middle class to the lower class. Or, in other words, reduction to the lowest common denominator. It’s exactly why it’s so hard to find a good employee, anymore. People are fed up with the abuse, when executives are sleeping in beds of money.
I have a friend up in the 80¢/mi range. Sometimes, he gets parked, when lesser paid drivers get ran. I told him he costs too much money to run. But, when they’re in a bind, they always call him for the bailout like an expeditor, because he’s reliable.Crude Truckin', alds, bzinger and 8 others Thank this. -
They should know, You get what you pay for.
Bad driversmeans bad inspections and csx points for th not taking care of equipment and tickets and an increase chance of accidents for less paid, less trained people.
Bring this up ^
I wouldn’t sign, I’d go talk to someone in person.
Is this a Full company thing, All employees, dispatcher/shop, let’s see. etc.
Of course that’s making waves, but they started that by throwing a rock into the streamCrude Truckin', Frank Speak, JoeyJunk and 3 others Thank this. -
They were offering 10k signing bonus.. guess that’s cheaper, paid over a year no doubt.
Looking at pay chart, they’re weeding out older hands, lower money gets less cut, but, you’ve got vacation pay and such, usually when companies cut pay, a sign of struggling.
Can stay, or draw vacation time and look for something and ride the boat, or abandon ship.Tb0n3, hope not dumb twucker, JoeyJunk and 2 others Thank this. -
Burning a bridge is done out of anger, where as I am merely unsure what comes next. Sampling various outside input right now seems like the best approach.Last edited: Apr 29, 2023
