A broker lied to me straight up and now I’m sitting as a work in at a Home Depot distribution. I’ve delivered to this distribution in the past several times so nothing was off with the ratecon saying 7-3 because they’ll give exact appointments but they’ll start knocking on doors at 5:30am and roll everyone in. The problem with this is the brokers know this information and they will use that information to get unsuspecting goofs like me to not verify by calling ahead before picking up the load. The broker apologizes and shows sympathy and all that nonsense. But that garbage goes right out of the window when you bring up compensation for sitting waiting for a work in call. Because hey I held up my end of the bargain, right? They clam up faster than a politician whose asked a solid but simple question:)
So with that rant out of the way. Use my situation this morning as a reminder to call ahead and verify these unload times before picking up for “ANY” distribution centers. No matter what your experience is. I got complacent yesterday and now it’s costing me a whole lot of time and some money.

    Vacation!!

    Is there a ditch nearby?
Go practice casting an imaginary fishing pole, and usually they’ll get you out of there.
But if they do ask if you’re doing any good, go through motions of lying down the fishlike, walk to bank and pull up an imaginary line and say, “Whatcha think of that?”

I got burned by a shady blue star broker about 12 years ago going into a Home Depot DC in Birmingham. They (shady brokers with Home Depot freight) used to claim "live unload" on a 24/48 hrs drop trailer situation that had marginally better rate than most other options. My understanding after that and to this day that's how all Home Depot DC's roll? If you can't drop/hook don't book the load.

I was sitting here thinking earlier about all the broker BS I've seen over the years. So many little lies just to cover a load. Hear the same #### every day. Do a good job and show up on time every time and think it matters? No-one cares. You'll never be anything more than the cheapest option any of them could find at any given moment.

Unfortunately brokers lying and being dishonest is very common. There are some good ones out there, but a lot of the good ones don't post on load boards, as they have their regular drivers that they use.

I run flatbed only. I would never agree to drop a trailer for a distribution center:) The ratecon says 7-3 like they do everyday. You will have a set appointment but it hasn’t ever mattered until today. 5:30 am like clock work. They come out and start knocking on doors. Only this time the guy is having swinging contest with the broker on my load. He tells me point blank that I’m a work in and to leave and stage off site and wait for a call. According to the supervisor everyone was informed of this work in status but me. Now I wait. But because I have a ratecon that says 7-3 I really don’t think I can force more compensation but I’m pushing pretty hard.

I will gladly drop the name once I’m empty. I’ve worked with these guys multiple times with no issues. I’m really not sure what the deal is with them.

Ok, was it the same broker/agent that you used in the past?

Ahhh, different for flats. That was van for me. I would never agree to drop a trailer there either but the broker left that little detail out.

Even the "good ones" aren't your friend. Same thing holds true, you're always their best cheapest option even when it never posts to a board. They might pretend a little sympathy for you if they made an honest mistake like his scenario. Might even toss you a few extra peanuts "out of their own pocket" that in no way cover the headache.
