Yes baby steps are the best way.... I went from company to lease purchase to leased on owner operator to own authority.... Can still say the learning curve is steeper then mount Everest.. And the mistakes made everyday with own authoritty is much more heart braking then anything else because you get punished both physically and financially

Truckers who think that doing business directly with shipper will solve their rate issues, in my opinion are wrong. Because another trucker, POS , with no integrity, no discipline, no ethics will contact the shipper and will offer his/her service for less money. Most of them are the ones with 1 than more truck. Those guys need to keep their drivers , so they will crawl for few cents. Shippers are not blind or deaf. They know what is going on out there. They know that we are not united, they know that we are a bunch of pretencious business people that we don't know crap about business. They also know that if you are willing to haul a load for 2.00 per mile , someone else is going to do it for 1.75 per mile and so for.
So, the problem here is not the shippers, brokers or the president. We are the FKN problem. We, ourselves are destroying this industry.
The guys who started this topic gave us real example on what really happens when you own your business.
if we really want to take back this industry from monopolies, oligopolies and mega carriers , in my opinion, we have only 2 options. We either become 100% independent O/O or we start driving for them with well paid salaries, full benefits, life insurance in case you die driving their trucks, no voice recorders or video recording in your face and unionize!!. Stop selling yourself short!! Stop accepting abuse and exploitation. I don't see any other way.
I don't even want to talk about lease purchase operators.

Leasing to a carrier that has their own freight can help you avoid some of the ups and downs of the marketplace. It can also help flatten the learning curve of truck ownership.

In addition to what's already been stated in this thread so far, do y'all have any advice for a new O/O? I literally just got my numbers, and I want to make sure that I'm doing the best I possibly can as soon as I'm able to begin operations

Decided to ask here. My MC has now turned 6 months. I've been working under a company's authority but had a small box truck on my MC and paid for it's insurance. I heard a lot that 6 months might be a way to start getting loads under my own authority but most brokers are now saying it has to be at least 1 year. So how do you started and overcome this problem? Or was it easier back in those days (of course, I think).
P.s my current company f...d up their MC, received a bad freight guard review and now has issues with insurance. So I started looking for another one but most of them require one year experience vs six months I have. So the question of starting using my own authority is pretty vital for me now.

Too many factors to compare to. The same load can be booked within 15-20% variance. Mostly depending on the rating and age of the authority you work under, how many brokers were on the contract etc etc not to mention what type of loads/trailer you haul.
My recent experience with onions from CA to the same area in NY and I spoke to four o/os and the rates we had varied from $5,100 to $5,950. That's really not proving anything but how broken now the market is.

    I didn’t wait.
When my authority went active, which has been several years now, i went to hauling for a broker, used him/his company which has brokers over different sections of country/states, one is TX only, and stayed until i got some dedicated for a company, now i use 3-4 brokers to fill in back hauls, sometimes take loads out for them, if I have nothing going on.

They wanted 33,000 per year from me in New York and this was for progressive. Then when I moved and changed my address to Pennsylvania, that same insurance came down from 33k to only 10k. I weight out my options and said since I’ll be on the road of time. I decided to move for now to PA, since I’ll never be home. And keep that 20k difference a year.
