Just in case there is any interest, NY State Police Troop C which covers the TZ Bridge and surrounding area reports no flooding or other problems that would affect the bridge or the interstates leading up to and away from it.

Too bad you don’t have time to take backroads the whole trip .
makes for a
Much more relaxing experience
I’ve found WAZE app on my phone to be helpful
some of the potholes and hazards are listed on there in real time
as well as most of the speed copsepnh and gentleroger Thank this. -
Thanks, roundhouse. Yeah, I agree on the back roads part. Years (decades) ago we took a motorcycle trip from New Hampshire to North Carolina to San Francisco to Seattle and back again. Almost all of the trip going out to SF and up to Seattle was on back roads and it was great. Ran low on time and had to take the interstates coming back and it wasn't as much fun.
As for speed traps, not especially worried about them... my motorhome is a Winnebago Warrior / Toyota V6 that can barely get out of its own way and spends most of its time at 60-65 mph max, so not much of an opportunity to speed.
I also use Waze, early and often, been using it for a few years and it has been very helpful. -
My parents used to go from south Florida to north Georgia every year to spend the summer , and the always took backroads
Because my mom hated interstates -
I've done both of the routes you mention. I didn't remember much difference. I would just pick the one with less construction. I did your second route, the one over the new Tappanzee (mario cuomo) bridge the last time I ran from middle TN to Bangor ME. I don't care for I-81 much, but it's useful.epnh Thanks this.

Just read this thread, was wondering what happened, then saw "Show ignored content" at the end lol. I very rarely ignore people here, but well over half of them have been purged over the years so I don't regret using that feature.TheLoadOut, InTooDeep and 88 Alpha Thank this.

This thread is actually a FAN-TAS-TIC example of what this Forum brings to the table -- in spades.

From the usually undeserved snarky, caustic, and/or cynical replies....to the very knowledgeable, helpful, hospitable counsel....to the Moderators who always seem to know when to say when .....to the latecomers who missed "the party" of a thread....yet still leave a monday morning quarterback's perspective (or similar).
Keep up the good work -- Everybody!

We're back from our trip down to TN. Going down we took I-84 to Wilkes Barre and I-81 to TN, coming back we took the TZ Bridge route. Coming back was far, far worse than going down, and to add insult to injury we got stuck in traffic for hours due to some bridge work being done on I-95 in CT. So we took some back roads to I-84 west of Hartford and got stuck in traffic again, due to everyone trying to get around the bridge work on I-95.
We ran into long stretches of interstate where the high speed lane was relatively smooth and the right hand lane was a busted-up mess (do you guys still call those the "hammer lane" and the "granny lane"?). So at those times I drove in the high speed lane as much as I could but that underpowered RV of mine struggles to get over 65 especially on hills so not really suitable for the high speed lane, so I ended up in the busted-up-mess lane much of the time anyway.
I used to fly a Beechcraft Bonanza many years ago, and it sure made life easier to make the trip in 5 hours instead of 2 days... sure do miss that airplane.

I live in NH I am a truck driver and never heard of an app that tells you how rough a highway is but a good GPS will tell you where the slow downs are and alternate routes.
