Hello, I am just wondering if anyone has transferred their Canadian Cdl to Virginia.
I phoned and asked the Dmv and they said as long as I can prove a residency, have a medical card, and prove legal status it will just be going in and switching.

I don’t know about Virginia, but here in Arkansas you’d have to have your *original* (one with the raised seal) birth certificate as well as proof of residency.

Do you have legal residency in the US? Are you allowed under US law to stay in the US indefinitely? That seems to be the issue

tscottme Thanks this.

I moved to Texas at first but they seem to not have everything sorted out. Front desk at the DPS told me I could, i even asked her if she could verify and she went in asked and brought 3 forms for me to fill out make an appointment and come back.
I made an appointment and when I went back they told me they would downgrade my cdl to a regular license and I would have to do everything again.
They also told me to keep the one I have and work with it until it expires except no one hires me with the Canadian Cdl.
I was thinking of buying my own truck and running under my own authority but the insurance is very hard to find and the one I found quoted $50K.tscottme Thanks this. -
Pretty sure you'll have to attend cdl school. That means getting a CDL-A Permit and starting over.
Which state is your domicile address in?
Apply with a cdl school or a trucking company cdl school.Mik112 Thanks this. -
I believe you have to show up at the DMV in a white Volvo or else they'll turn you away as being a fake.

I once knew a Canadian driver who emigrated from the UK. From what I've learned about the British articulated lorry license, it's probably as difficult to pass as the German license is, yet he had to take training in Canada to get his.

Here is an update!
I contacted Virginia DMV and they told me they will exchange a Canadian Cdl.
I established residency/moved to Virginia and went to the DMV office. I had the following documents.
- Bank/credit card statement and a cable bill. (Residency)
- SSN card and permanent resident/green card. (Legal Status)
- New medical certificate.
Most of the employees working at the branch wasn't aware it was possible. The system administrator actually said it can't be done outright. I had to explain I got confirmation through phone and email that says otherwise. So they had to call the Cdl department and ask if it is possible.
The lady working on my case was very helpful. She had to ask the CDL department over the phone a couple of times on what to do.
They waived the written and driving exams.
So Virginia is another state where you can exchange a Manitoba, Canada CDL.Bud A., Accidental Trucker and Chinatown Thank this. -
Good job. I would have lost money betting it couldn’t be done.
