That was also a factor in timing my departure.
The industry is destroying itself by not trying to improve safety

Plenty of ramps to turn around, dunno what would make people do these stupid decisions.

I think back several years when in 1990 CDLs became into play and the government and the trucking companies shouted out, "we are going to weed out the unsafe drivers", then came 2004 when the HOS started making changes, again the same "line" was heard from the government and companies. Changes in the HOS kept going on for several years, exemptions started. THEN CAME "ELDS" and the shout from Washington could be heard all the way to the West Coast, "we have it now, we are going to reduce truck accidents dramatically".

The more "fine tuning" the accident rate kept climbing. Every time the government made changes to the Federal Regulations, the more accidents showed up.

Funny thing and I am not prejudiced or bias when I say this, the government is not even enforcing their own regulations. Exemptions after exemption are being put into place. Good example is the regulation that states very plainly that before a CDL is issued the driver must speak and read English. How many drivers out there today that do not meet this regulation?????

The "bottom line" on the highways years ago was "cooperation" we looked after each other out on the road, but now the "bottom line" has turned into "competition". And the attitude has become, "ME FIRST"

Here is a little information about both the bus company whose bus was rear ended, and the trucking company who operated the tractor trailer that did the rear ending:
I have been unable to find out if the truck driver survived, if he is has he been charged with anything or even his name.

19 Investigates: DOT inspected trucking, charter bus companies and found violations prior to deadly Ohio crash

19 Investigates also dug into the safety and inspection history of Mid State Systems Inc., the company whose semi-truck crashed into the back of the tour bus and caught fire.
Mid State Systems operates out of Hebron in Licking County, less than 10 miles from where the crash happened in Etna.
On its website, Mid State Systems states it has been operating for more than 35 years.
Federal records show the company transports chemicals, paper products, and “general freight.”
According to the FMCSA, the trucking company has had no reported fatal crashes or any involving injuries during the past two years.
Records show the company had more than 38 inspections during that time, including 17 hazmat inspections.
Two hazmat inspections resulted in an ‘out of service’ status, meaning one or more violations was found. That percentage is higher than the national average, according to DOT.
A company representative said ‘no comment’ when contacted by 19 Investigates on Tuesday.

So the bus company is actually in more serious trouble than the trucking company, see as how they’re looking at a “acute intervention” by the Feds!

You know, you'd think that a vehicle capable of carrying 50+/- PEOPLE would be subject to more rigorous inspection than a vehicle carrying a load of toilet paper.
But I don't ever recall seeing one pulled over.
    It's a weird world.
