What do you mean by, "federal facility"? You need to be more specific. You won't make it into Ft. Meade or NSA with one ever. They also dog search the vehicles thoroughly.

You'd probably have no issue getting into NHS with it though. All depends on where you're going.

Generally I call ahead and ask or I don't go there if I can't get an answer with a point of contact to refer to if I have issues upon arrival.

After several recent mass shooting events on military bases, the way the bases operated in the 1980s & 1990s are largely irrelevant. Base commander sets policy for the base. The way some base operated in 1978 in Texas may have no bearing on your firearm being discovered by a human or animal search in NY state in 2023.

There are several situations where having a gun gets you in trouble, even though EVERY gun owner likes to think only about situations where not having a gun gets you killed. Ignoring one side of the coin doesn't prevent it from landing the wrong way for you. At some trucking companies he would have been fired on the spot. Know before you go. Some people like to just ask people that will give them the answer they want. That's a bad plan.

Zip tie it to the fence outside the gate. It will be there when you exit.

The only places I go have lock boxes for us to use, before we actually enter. So I can lockup personal items, such as phones, cameras, knives or any other prohibited item. and the key goes with me to retrieve personal items on the way out after the truck is technically off base property.

Believe me, I am all for carrying a firearm in the truck. I remember those days too but in the current environment, being caught with it in a restricted area will land you in a bad place. I made a pickup about 18 months ago at the port of South Carolina. I have no TWIC card and needed an escort to go into the port. She asked about firearms and I told her yes. She had me Lock it in her car. Sure enough, got popped in the port for a random dog walk around inspection. Two separate vehicles with two separate dogs and handlers each went around the truck. Not sure what they were looking for but I sure was glad that weapon was in her trunk and not it’s usual location

Carrying a gun in the truck is a big deal. Have a plan if you get dispatched to some place WITHOUT friendly gun rules. Don't bet a night in jail, or getting fired on the spot, that they will have lock boxes or highly cooperative employees. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. It's you gun, have a plan for BOTH possibilities. Call and ask in advance, or stop on the way to the customer and make arrangements. I say the best backup plan is to get a ride to a convenient gun store and pay them to store it for a few hours or have the gun store ship it to a convenient/reliable gun store back home. FFL dealers have to track every firearm they deal with or they lose their FFL. Get a receipt.

Driver calling customer and pretending to be a dispatcher: "Yes, one of our drivers asked me if having his legal firearm in his truck was going to be a problem at your facility. I didn't remember the answer from the last time we picked up at your place." Obviously don't mention your real trucking company or your name to the customer. Better to ask a day or two before you arrive instead of the same day, if possible. Every base may have a different policy. What happened in 1982 in Texas may not be true in NY/NJ/CA in 2023. Don't believe every story from a truck driver about "him bringing his gun onto base". Many drivers retell stories some stranger told them and "improve" them while changing who/what/where were involved in the original story. Don't bet your freedom on some stranger's story.

Housekeeping steals stuff and they know the combo to the room safes. Most room safes are trivial to break into. Everyone hides things in the same 2 or 3 spots that's how burglars know where to look first. Under the bed/mattress, in the bathroom, behind the curtains, in one of the drawers of the furniture are not the "they'll never think to look here" spots we wish.

Personally, I don't pick or drop anywhere that takes my rights away but I also understand there's plenty of drivers out there that don't have that option. Seems like the gun dealer or pawn shop would be great options as long as the fees aren't exorbitant.

I wouldn't trust the motel deal. Too many thieves work in Housekeeping. A friend of mine caught one taking his wallet from his pants off the floor as he slept in Vegas a couple years ago.
