Is 550 decent to take with empty with a 53' step deck having the axles slid ahead? Has it cleared off or is it still snow packed on the north slopes?

550 over Red Mountain Pass is not a truck route. If you’re going to Montrose / Grand Junction then take US 160 West from Durango to CO 184 to CO 145 over Lizard Head Pass.

Listen to @PacoTaco. I'm a pretty dahmed adventurous driver, and I go over Lizard Head. Nice drive in a car though.

Here's a pic of the actual Highway

Seriously, you are suggesting taking the "Million Dollar Highway"? If you have to ask, DON'T! The southern part IS as bad as that pic shows. Stop by the monument on that one tight turn where TWICE a snowplow driver ran off and FELL TO HIS DEATH there. You can still see the wreckage!! Oh, and also, when you get to Ouray, you'll find that it is a tourist town, with people crossing the road just about everywhere. Then, Leadville is at over 10,000' elevation; assume your power will be significantly reduced. Oh, and I'm also fairly certain that a 53' trailer will make you O/S. Also, there is NOWHERE to pull over. THIS IS A CAR ROUTE ONLY!

Shouldn't guard rails be required? I've driven over Independence Pass and I think there were sections without guard rails. Not fun.

Yeah, I made a mistake and did this road in a class C RV. Longest drive of my life. (Do not attempt if you have any issues with heights.)

Then I ended up on the devils highway! (CO or US? 666) Highly stressful day.

Can't push snow with guard rails on narrow highway!

Guard rails took all the fun out of Wolf Creek Pass. Have to do US 16 "Cloud Peak Skyway" or US 14 in Wyoming to test your nerve these days.

If guard rails make people feel safe they drive faster . I bet without them they have less crashes causing injuries or death overall.

Not to get on your case, OP, but even Swift drivers know better than to take this highway.....
