A friend of mine adds to the odometer about 2000 miles a week and grosses not even $4000. He might be around $2500 after fuel but then between the truck payment, insurance, and the inevitable maintenance, $1500 sounds about right, I think. I advised him to apply for a cement truck driver job while it was available. Much less stress and more time for fishing.

It is not that bad but all depends on the truck and everything else. Are you getting 5 MPGs in that old truck? Are you doing power only? Leased to Scheinder or do you have own authority? Lot's of stuff needs to be spelled out to even begin to help you out. Give us the run down and we can give you better information. Also never believe anything on the internet! The "good freight" is being held for company trucks.
It used to be as soon as CS created a load it showed up on both the Area Planner and IC Board at the same time, first come first served. For the last year or so loads will be held back from the ICs until the planner has a chance to assign a company truck to it.

Sounds about right, low paying freight, low miles, poor use of time due to the lack of enough freight vs trucks available.
