To get right to the point, my manager told me that when I'm at a yard and customer lots to NOT use the yard move on my ELD. Instead, she wants me to go off-duty and use creep mode (drive under 5 mph) so I can save time on my clocks. Most yards have a 10-15 mph speed limit, and in the case of today's yard, a bunch of drivers waiting behind me. I am only a year in, but I have a feeling this is not legal. I did take screenshots of the conversation for preservation, but I'm just wondering what I should do?
Is what my manager asking me to do at yards & customer lot legal?

Many of us do that on occasion. I know I have.

Just use yard move. You can edit that time, anyhow. And creeping around a yard at 4mph isn't safe when you have yard dogs and others whipping around looking for spots to pickup or drop their trailers.
One shady request will follow another. For a dispatcher or company to be so concerned about your drive time that you need to save minutes is a bit concerning.Last edited: Oct 8, 2024

On the system I use you can not edit Yard move, as it relates to driving, might be the way Heartland Ex has the software configured. Same as can not edit the drive line.
U normally just use yard move, If you accidently hit 5 mph it kicks you to driveline.broke down plumber, bryan21384, Crude Truckin' and 2 others Thank this. -
everyone sees this at truck stops and we all pretty much know what they doing. Even if its annoying for some us who are in a rush to get somewhere all comes to state of mind. You really don't shave much time off and theres a double-edged sword playing dumb games you tend to win dumb prizes and only takes one time to mess things up badly...

I know creeping is a thing, and I get it. Buut, when I am a big yard and these numb nuts are blocking other traffic creeping around, murder is definitely in my heart.

Record her telling you that and then get her fired. She's not your friend. She needs to go.

That just shows that she has a fundamental misunderstanding of clock management. Even if you use every minute of your 11 hour drive time, you still have 3 more hours of on duty time available. Saving 5-10 minutes of that will almost never actually prove useful or necessary.
I’m not saying that I NEVER use my entire 14 hour clock, but it’s exceedingly rare.broke down plumber, Rugerfan, Accidental Trucker and 5 others Thank this. -
Pretty typical of the compliance folks I dealt with, bunch of know nothing know it alls. They all do real well at their desks, and I was constantly in trouble with any I ever dealt with. They were NOT an outlaws friend. To be clear, I ALWAYS went real slow in a customers lot, so 4 mph doesn't sound unreasonable. If one is cutting it that close on hours, not sure how this could help.broke down plumber, hope not dumb twucker, silverspur and 1 other person Thank this.

Unless you're creeping around for 10 consecutive hours, or you're already at 14 hours and doing this for a while before legit going off duty, I don't see how this helps. Any non-driving, including yard move, counts toward your 30 minute break. And to answer your question, no it's not legal.
