Most of us who are drivers are because we grew into the job. Like said previously, work is limited so a lot of us don’t do anything new to jeopardize our ways of life. Boys become there dads and daughters marry into other families who are alike. To put into perspective, I’m the son of a driver. My family all play a part in the family business. My wife is the daughter of another trucking company. Now we all work together and it’s basically one bigger company.
You having next to no experience will be very hard to land anything worth working at. Most companies aren’t kind on teaching in Hawaii.

I moved to Las Vegas NV in 2016 because I got bored of the monotony of working on an island. I work local but can be sent to any state on a days notice. I didn’t have to learn anything new to land my job here. I work for a Teamster transport company and make a way better wage/living than I’d ever have in Hawaii. I will tell you to learn your job and become great at it before finding where you want to do it. Nobody in this industry wants people who can’t hold a job or stay in one place long. Not to mention if you even want to this. I can’t count how many applicants I don’t give a chance to drive for us simply cause they tell me when riding with me on the first day that they seen this job looks easy. My truck is polished up and I do dirt. So it must an easy job? No buddy far from that. Time is valuable. Most don’t want there’s wasted.

I’m from Hawaii born and raised. My family owns a general land grading/ trucking company. I learned to drive at a very young age to haul asphalt and aggregate.
If you are NOT from Hawaii then working there will not be a pleasant experience. Cost of living will eat you alive. Most driving jobs will not yield you more than 20$ an hour. That will definitely not be close enough per month to have an apartment and pay utilities. On Oahu where most the bulk of work is, that’s where you’ll make the most if you land a decent job. The cost of living only gets worst when you go to other islands. Shipping is the driving cost of goods. Everything gets shipped from the west coast to Oahu. Then they transfer everything from 40’ containers to 20’ containers and put ‘em on barges that sail once a week to other islands.
The roadways are narrow and the infrastructure is over 30 years past due. Too many vehicles on the roads. There is no space to create byways or widen the freeways. All lanes on Oahu are 9’ wide. Making maneuvering difficult for a new driver. The island is gridlocked every morning from 5am to 9am for morning commute and 3pm-8pm at night to get home. It’s a normal thing that everyone is used to.
last thing I’ll touch base is people. If you aren’t from Hawaii you won’t be welcomed like you see on the travel channel and Hawaii 5-0. You are a threat to everyone else’s way of life is how they see it. Everyone in Hawaii is laid back and doesn’t rush to work. Being that work is limited they’ll save it for tomorrow and the next. You coming from somewhere else means someone’s cousin/brother/uncle can’t have the job you took. I’m using words like took and stole because that’s the thought process of the islands. You are entering a state that was once a kingdom. People like to live in a past they never lived in and play the victim card.

I was on the Big Island. It’s a little over 200 miles if you loop the whole thing. There were maybe 3 trucks on the island with sleepers while I was there and all they could do was container work because of the length limit. The guy I worked for had to buy 47ft cow trailers to make the length limit with a W900 daycab.

Edit: I think it was ACR Water that had some sleeper trucks. They definitely looked out of place. Lol.

I’ve already made a few calls, and most companies want me to stop by to apply, then they’ll take me on the road before making a decision. They are also asking for a resume. My previous experience is corporate-related and not related to trucking, so I’m not sure why they’re all asking for one. In any case, I welcome any good and useful advice.

No weigh stations. Yes on DOT cops. But it was common for me to be 100k+ gross with an end dump. And you also see heavy equipment being moved on small lowboys.
