As we have endured some tough times recentely hitting the industry as well asour economy .I had lost my previose job over some bs that had happened right, so I hit the job market .I found it hard to find a job becouse i was let go of my last job.Luckely i had kept my ties with my first trucking company that being swift.
So I went back over and was rehired with my old company and as well I seen alot of old people that i had previosly worked with. I have also found that the company had made many drastic changes to meet the challenges at hand such as letting a lot of staff go, safty personel dm's dispatchers, account managers, and so on .So im not the only one right or am I.To my supprise i had seen my old DM getting in to truck ,shockinglly , he lost his job in the office. I tell you it as it is.
I work as an owner operator at the Wilmington terminal pulling containers out of the port. I would not recomend it unless you need work, there are a wave of problems that contuelly arise, for one you haft to deal with the monstrous Long Shore Union as it seems they do what they want wene they want.
Two,get hired there, woking for Swift, you haft to lease one of there trucks and they usually if not always want you to get a day cab,and the payment are two high. total $410 a wk plus fuel maint.insurance permits and so on,If you happen to break even, your ahead of the game. Also working with the long shoreman can be a challenge as they are union and get paid by the houre, theyre in no hurry to rush off there payroll to get you going, becouse they do get paid by the houre,so the longer you sit and wait the more they get paid. Flush job but it dont do anything for me. If needed they sit and make you wait hours before they get up and do somthing , the whole time they just sit and look at you like your nobody. You cant tell them anything, you can get banned for life just for arguing with them. As I almost was for prottesting the fact they were holding me up for no reason at all, sitting for six and a half hours was almost out the gate till they called back to the office just to tell me everthing was fine, so i had waite in line again, adding an additional houre on my day.
There were some really great people out of the terminal though, and some really great people to work for.The DM's terminal managers dispatchers drivers were for the most part good people, i enjoyed working for them. But thers were alot of things that would go wrong. Such as wrong booking numbers, as this is a problem at the port wich will make you wait in lines on top of lines, before you can get a load out, any ripple in your message that might piss off the clerks or not be 100% accurate can couse major delays. Some times you get a messed up dispatch with a mix matched chassis and container meaning the cans from one company and the chassis another. As this can couse you to go to multipul terminals on the same load waiting in several lines at each terminal all in one load. Bad dispatching can couse you to go to multiple terminals waiting in lines in each as you go.You want to pick up were you dropped of course, but alot of times it just doesnt do it.
With all this, you expected to get it done within your leagal time limits becouse as you know swift is real big on safty, giving audits and violations, they keep track of times you left gates l-call and even dive in too the computer and check.
Overall it has helped me out though it got me back behind the wheel and has reopend doors for me again, there are a few making money down there unfortunatelly, im not one of them. Maybe one of my mastake was rehiring as an owner opp without any time in the division. But did i have a choice, like me theyre were many others in the same boat they couldnt find work for one reason, . I was having a hard time finding a job, so it was a desperate messure i felt i had to take.its a give and take thing, and although a have not become rich it has helped me out, its catch 22, the messed up thing is alot of these companies require you to have at least 6 months recent driving experience with a majore carrier, but you need to get hired to get that recent driving done. I can say i have been able to get past the work barrier ,wich has oppened doors for me and other than the pay, the people i worked with were pretty cool.
I tell you back in the days I was making good money with swift, probably better than most, but id recomend really waying your opptions before enterring this kinda of deal.It might not be for some if money is your main goal, as i had not had alot of expences at the time.Thank God

    Good luck;:biggrin_25510:Full Speed
