I think he was pointing out that people cry about the government when it comes to things they don’t like, but then want the government to step in and fix their problem when it comes to other issues.Oxbow, Numb, Knucklehead and 1 other person Thank this.

Nobody is being abused. If the driver was foolish enough to sign off on things he did not agree to then may he reap what he's sown. Of course the carriers are scumbags but they aren't putting a gun to anyone's heads to sign the contract.
-
Then he shouldn’t complain about the quality of drivers on the road. If he’s ok with lease purchases and “people get what they deserve” then he’s ok with the constant churn of unqualified, uneducated and financially unprepared “drivers” on the road.
I am NOT ok with them. They are a part of the demise of this industry. The government getting out of this industry is a large contributor to this issue.gentleroger, Gearjammin' Penguin, LTL Bull and 1 other person Thank this. -
The industry as a whole is a mess. Personally I feel people should be responsible for their own choices no matter what. People willingly sign a contract and then are surprised by the outcome. As an industry it’s not possible to have it both ways. People can’t complain about certain regulations or mandatory speed limiters and then turn around and ask the government to mandate detention pay or ask for help with broker transparency.
We’d be better off if it took $25k or more to get operating authority and there was no factoring companies. Make someone have $100k liquid in order to have their own authority. Nothing will get better so long as it only takes $300 to get rolling.gentleroger, Gearjammin' Penguin, Lonesome and 4 others Thank this. -
100%!!
I also agree with pretty much everything else you said. But it also cuts both ways. You can’t complain about how the industry has become a bottom barrel job for the uneducated and don’t want further deregulation.
For what it’s worth. I’m ok with speed limiters, and elds. Both limit production which make my time more valuable. Which means I can charge a higher rate.
I’m mandatory detention has the potential to limit what I charge. And broker transparency only serves those who are not good at trucking. Frankly they need to go be a company driver, just like those who do a lease purchase.Gearjammin' Penguin, LTL Bull and Long FLD Thank this. -
My comments weren’t directed toward you personally, just an observation of how things go on social media and YouTube when it comes to the government and trucking.
I think back to 1991 when my dad passed away. At that time South Dakota still regulated intrastate trucking, it was called the B permit because the PUC number had “-B” at the end of it. Mom started getting calls about that permit before the funeral even happened because everyone around knew my grandpa was retired so the permit wouldn’t be used. Mom got just over $15k for the permit. Shady companies and shady brokers would go away if it took more skin to get an MC number.Gearjammin' Penguin, Knucklehead and ElmerFudpucker Thank this. -
I think there needs to be a distinction. There are a lot of scumbag outfits (we all know who they are) that have L/P programs that lean heavily in their favor. But, regardless of what we think of them, they do operate legally. And, if some numbnut is dumb enough to get involved with that, then so be it. That's on them. But, there's another faction of scoundrels that rip people off left and right that operate illegally. I don't presume to know exactly what the Government's intentions are here, but there does need to be something done about the illegal operators, IMO.Knucklehead, Gearjammin' Penguin, Lonesome and 3 others Thank this.

What are you claiming that's illegal though? Fraud, theft by deception and other similar crimes are already illegal. There's no need for them to reinvent the wheel. Simply enforce laws already in place. I don't think that's the issue the feds are trying to "fix" here though.
All the examples I've read about or experienced first hand were gripes about things that were ultimately agreed to in writing. Escrows immediately come to mind. Are you leased or have you ever been contractually obligated in such a fashion? -
No, I've never leased. And, like I said, I'm not presumptive enough to even guess what the Feds are *really* up to. But, there are in fact, a lot of illegal operators. That's why they pop up a new sign and new mc dot number more often than they change underwear. I'm just stating that's something the authorities should reign in, whether it's at the state, or federal, level. And, if that's not what this proposal is about, then so be it. Perhaps, my thoughts are a discussion for another day.gentleroger, Knucklehead, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this.
