Probably been asked 1000 times, sorry
I’ve been driving for a little over 5 months. I’m currently doing beer deliveries, but it sucks. Pay is awful, and I’m not really learning anything. It’s basically just sales with a little tractor trailer driving, I barely leave a 25 mile radius from the warehouse
So I’m looking for something more. But I don’t know what. I have a sick family member I take care of (they got sick after I got my CDL) so I can only really be gone for 2 days at a time, 3 days max. Obviously home everyday would be nice, but only being a driver for roughly half a year, I know that’s unrealistic til I hit my year mark at least.
So what’s some good companies that offer good flexible home time? I don’t care if it’s reefer, flatbed, dry van, etc. I was speaking with Central Oregon Transportation, and they seem to give the impression that I can really choose what’s good for me.
Obviously lease purchase owner operator is an option since I would *kinda* be my own employee. But once again, don’t really have the experience to just hop right into an owner operator. But I’ve rambled enough, please feel free to send me suggestions.
Also I imagine it matters. But I’m Lexington Kentucky based, clean driving record, all my endorsements
Job suggestions for flexible home time

Try a temp service that hires CDL drivers. Work when you want to.
The service assigns you to whichever company needs a driver. You might drive for 10 different companies, but your job history will only show one employer, the temp service.
Here's just one of a few:

Stay where you are...until you have 6 months there.
Then submit completed applications to all/any of the following that are within a 30 minute commute of your residence:
- Sysco
- Gordon Food Service
- U S Foods
- Performance Food Group
- Ben E Keith
- Core-Mark
- McLane
If you are somehow rejected/passed over by them all -- try again in 6 more months.

Best piece of knowledge you're going to get on this forum. Ready? Lease Purchase (aka Fleece Purchase) is NOT an owner operator. Far from it, in fact. All it is is a glorified company driver that gets to pay for the company's truck and the associated expenses while the company kicks back and collects the lion's share of the spending cabbage. Savvy?

Food service pays much better than beer/beverage. It’s still work, but more $$$$ makes it worlds more tolerable.

If you're looking to spread your wings a little but still be home regularly I'd look into the steel hauling carriers in your area.

For what it's worth, new drivers rarely have the luxury of calling their own hours. You go where the boss tells you, and little room for personal duties. The industry just doesn't work that way. I all but guarantee your sick loved one will need you, and you are stuck in a Loves in Nebraska for Xmas. I wouldn't venture into trucking until you can give it 100%, or don't bother. Staying local is the only way to be home easily, and even then, it's frowned upon. Those jobs rarely open up. The boss makes no money trying to get you home. Until your situation changes, I'd keep the CDL, but do something else close to home, for your loved ones sake.

Stay where you are until you find a home daily gig. A recruiter will tell you everything you want to hear to get you to fill out the app and get qualified. The reality is that no regional or OTR can guarantee when you get home, especially if you need to get home weekly. Trucks break down, customers hold you up, weather and the list goes on. Your sick family member needs you. You only need 6 months. Forget Leasing - it is a nightmare that you don't want any parts of at this time.
Good luck!tscottme Thanks this. -
Restaurant food service is home daily, local, always hiring. Sysco, PFG (PERFORMANCE Food Group), or similar companies. You are home daily but you start work very early & you work 12 hour days, and you work hard.
What do you mean by "flexible home time"? Do you mean you decide when you can take a day off with short notice? Your post seems to be asking about home daily, not random days off.
