Excuse me sir, that’s exceeding the company speed limit that I only found out about after working here for 5+ years.

Problem is that passenger vehicles aren't designed for the type of use that pilot cars get. Let's start with mileage - 100,000 miles is about the expected lifetime of a car. Rough math by an outsider says that a lazy pilot car will do that in 1.5 years, so manufacturer's maintenance guides aren't going to be very helpful and things will fail long before you'd expect. Cars also aren't designed to run at highway speeds constantly.

 

Toyota’s and Honda’s are great for pilot cars. Great on gas and good for 300K if you change the oil regularly.

 

My Kia Forte has 196,000 miles on it. Still going strong, 110 miles one way to work.

 

And if you took 100 identical Kia Forte and ran them exactly the same, how many would still be on the road?

 

I have two Honda, 04 Accord with 196,000 and a 12 Crosstour with 155,000. Both run a drive like new.

 

They figure 4000 highway miles equals 1000 city miles.
