I admit I have usually been a pushover and when I am in a construction zone and see a sign saying the right or left lane ends in a little bit, that I just sit there and let the cars fly on down and bring everyone else to a standstill. But that was not the case last night.
I was going south on 81 past Roanoke VA averaging four miles an hour in a construction zone and I see a sign saying the left lane is about to end in one or two thousand feet. Then I see all these cars behind me jump over into that lane to get in front of the rest of us. So I go and stick my truck half way out to stop them all. But it did not work, after following me for a couple minutes the car behind me pulls off the road to get around me, and wouldn't you know it but vhp just happened to have been right there beside him while he did it and instantly pulls the guy over.
I got to thinking later on that some troopers might frown on me for what I was doing, but not this time.
Do you guys ever block traffic from a lane that is about to end?

Yeah I've done it a few times. It helps when another truck in the other lane understands what you're doing and helps you out. I'd rather move at a consistent speed of 5 mph as opposed to stop, go, stop, go for 30 minutes. Though sometimes it's just not worth the trouble

Not for a long time, received a ticket for impeding in the 80's.
Ok big boy, Speedy356, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this. -
Zipper lane.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
he was nice about it and I gave him a "yes sir!" and jumped back in line.
wasn't 5 minutes later here comes a couple of 4 wheelers barreling down the hammer lane and then here comes the cop closing in on them. lol
I honked at him and he waved back. good times back 10-15 yrs agohotrod1653, IH9300SBA, Ok big boy and 8 others Thank this. -
WI, IL, IN, MN, CO, UT, MO, AZ, WA, NC, KS, MT, and NV all have zipper merge laws. OH, GA, VA, NY, MA and PA "recommend" it. I got bored looking up all the states, but you get the idea.
Run all lanes to the merge point. The closer to the merge point you get, the more space you allow for traffic to filter together. This is the safest and fastest way to deal with lane closures. Moving over too soon just increase the speed differential between the lanes, causing more slowing.201773, Folk Fries, OldeSkool and 4 others Thank this. -
It's not your job to manage traffic! The guys who do that, they bother me exponentially more than the cars being in that lane.

Doesn't really matter what you do, the 4-wheelers and Amazon drivers will find a way to screw it up.
Nowadays I just sit back and drive the truck and let it all come out in the wash.firemedic2816, D.Tibbitt, OldeSkool and 2 others Thank this. -
I've only done it once or so in my driving career, but I will support any driver who blocks the closed lane. If he is near me, I try to communicate to hang out right there & I'll let him in when we're close to the end. I fully support 100% someone blocking the closed lane after the first sign of notice. I'll support them all the way.

The thing that happens the most it seems as an example is as soon as you see the sign that says left lane closed and you are in the right lane everyone starts moving over to the left to go around. That totally shutting down the right lane to a stop or crawl while the left lane keeps moving BECAUSE they are entitled and do not know how to do a “theoretical” zipper merge and cut off the cars that are already doing the right thing and are in the right lane. So yes traffic control by a big truck is in most cases needed. We have to herd the sheep and zombies out there everyday.
