Is trucking even a realistic job at this point? I understand there is a DOT physical that any trucker would have to pass? I'm sure the question of neuropathy (numbness) would come up.

Type II is reversible. You'll always be a diabetic, but you can get your A1C to at least pre diabetic range, possibly high normal range. Get your weight to where it should be and your A1C will drop like a rock, along with your BP and a host of other issues that you likely have. Frankly, I don't think a career in trucking is in your best interest. If you can't maintain a proper diet and exercise routine (aka healthy lifestyle) now, it'll likely only get worse in a truck. I'm not trying to be mean. We all have our vices. I'm just being honest with you.

You could become a truck driver. There will be a lot of hoops and red tape to get a medical waiver.
You’re going to need quite a bit of help with documentation from your current doctor. It is going to take a while. You need to have this documentation done even before you start any CDL school. The school or company is going to require it in order to apply for the CLP. -
Good luck with your adventure.

I'm 35 years out of knowing the regulations of today; back in my time, using insulin was automatic disqualifier, unlike today. The key here is that you are RECENTLY diagnosed. This means that medications will have to be tried and tested BEFORE you will know if you can continue driving. So, at a minimum, you probably need to stay off the road for the next 6 months. And after that, you will only get like 3-monthMedical cards, so you'd better stay close to home.
If you were only THINKING about driving, I'd suggest that over the next 6-12 months, depending on how you deal with the meds, you may need to re-consider the idea. But, no, now is NOT the time to try getting your CDL or to start driving.
Right now, I'd concentrate on losing about100 lbs.
The neuropathy alone isn't likely a big issue; after 400 miles of bad road, a LOT of things will be numb.Zoltan1a, hope not dumb twucker and silverspur Thank this. -

Here are new guidelines for preventing stroke
In this thread (third post down), a courageous Wichita man took his A1C from 11.7 to 6.9. So it can be done.
