I received a disturbing notification regarding recruitment.
It used to be, if you referred an owner operator, and they put your name down, you'd receive a whopping $100 on your fuel card. Which was great. Because most guys doing OK at Landstar are not going to waste more than $100 of their time to blab on about Landstar.
So - now, the deal is -
If you refer an owner, and they sign up - you'll receive 1% of their adjusted revenue in the first year, and 2% in the second year. As far as I know, this doesn't come out of the new BCO's pocket - it's kicked in by corporate.
I don't care what the fuzzy math is -
When I see changes like this - I have to sound the silent alarm. Now you'll have a bunch of folks telling you lies about how awesome Landstar is, because there is a capacity for BS when $$ is added to the equation.
I've always been honest when people ask me about Landstar - so, just throwing this one out in the atmosphere.
The truck count is down from 10,000 trucks 10 years back, to some 7,500 last time I checked.
And yes - the load board is flooded with cut and paste agents that are sub agents in foreign countries.
Take care, and best of luck folks.
Landstar is the best - trust me!

I never received $100 for anyone. My parking neighbor was telling about this new mega style recruiting policy. If the call center sub agents in foreign countries wasn't jumping the shark, this is. Glad I left years ago. LS Still has opportunity, but not nearly what they had in 2009 when I leased on.
Lonesome, Rideandrepair, FullMetalJacket and 2 others Thank this. -
They're asking you to hype to company so you'll have more competition for limited loads. Why would you do that? If the product was good, it would sell itself. Trying to get owners to do the lifting is not a great sign.Feedman, Lonesome, Diesel Dave and 3 others Thank this.

Yeah - it's just not a good look. I'll be pretty honest when people do ask about them - just to make sure the stars in their eyes are a little dimmer. A lot of folks don't read the contract, study the charges, and know what they're getting into. I read the whole darned 34 page contract, and with the help of some kind folks, had a direct insight into what freight rate opportunities were ACTUALLY achievable at the time.
I know it's an independent contractor model, but it bothers me how outright stingy and cheap they are with the people that bring the revenue in. I can think of multiple ways they could reward longevity and revenue earned for them at a reasonable cost to their bottom line, but all you get is a cheesy Christmas gift, cheap safety gifts, and they lean on their 'Appreciation Days' events and giving away a couple of trucks every year.
It seems every other winner of those trucks has a story that reads "I was about to go out of business and didn't know what I was going to do until I won the truck'. -
AL Williams sales model. All you need is about 50 recruits and retire early.
Feedman, Lonesome, GoneButNotForgotten and 1 other person Thank this. -
They should do something like if a driver is leased on for 10 years, they get a free cruise…..
oh wait….Feedman, Lonesome, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yeah - that went away. It's a $500 Visa gift card. that's roughly $1 a week gratitude for 10 years . . .Diesel Dave, Feedman and Lonesome Thank this.
