Hell, I volunteered to work New Year’s Day. 10 hours of holiday pay plus double time for all hours worked. It would have been my regular shift anyways.

It was rare for us to have extra work on the contracted day off holiday's at Yellow, but even with offering overtime pay, holiday pay, etc it was hard to find someone to do it when we did. Most of the time it was a hot piece of military/government freight that had to get somewhere or get delivered if we had anything.

They got me training this OTR guy to do LTL.
I told my supervisor this is gonna be a rough learning experience for him.
he refuses today to pull forward and block 3 out of six lanes of traffic to make a left.
im like dude we’ll be here forever if you wait for all six lanes to be clear. Claims he’s been driving since 1985, and he is complaining about backing at 45 degree angles driver side.
we went down an exit on 75 I told him hey get on the left now it turns into a six lane. Three turn lanes go left the other three go right. “I can’t cross on solid white”. I’m like dude you can’t be this submissive driving in cities like Atlanta, or Miami you’ll be here forever.
im like *facepalm* he gets stuck in a middle turn lane, which then I had to get him to run the yellow because we cant make the left on the middle turn lane.
dude trying to take 20-30min pre trips. I’m like dude we’re gonna get in trouble. Check your tires, liquids, lights and get the hell out of here. The truck and trailer are brand new.
I told him “hey, follow me going south on 75. Stay in the middle lane until this exit, and then we’ll ride the right lane”. He goes “I only drive in the right lane because in the middle lane I gotta focus on both sides”.
I got to the customer in 45 mins, and he gets there in like 90mins when it’s a dedicated account, and the customer pays for our on duty time. I’m like dude they track their loads they know how long it’s suppose to take…Last edited: Jan 11, 2026 at 12:26 AM
hotrod1653, Gearjammin' Penguin, MACK E-6 and 3 others Thank this. -
Oh, and he has to take a smoke break every time he gets in and out of a trailer.
Jesus Christ, I’m trying not be that grumpy old guy on the job but it’s so hard not to be.hotrod1653, Cardfan89, Opus and 2 others Thank this. -
I ran OTR for 15 years before I started in LTL. There are some great OTR drivers out there that could easily run LTL with no issues. We've got more than our fair share of turds in LTL out there wreaking havoc on the roadways.Lumper Humper Thanks this.

I think he just has no concept of city peddling.
sure it’s a truck. I’m not asking you to ride butt, but you cant be going 55 on i75 when we have a lot of work to do.
honestly, it’s the smoke breaks that tick me off. You’re already not efficient you stopping to smoke and kill 5mins every stop isn’t helping.
I swear I think some guys just hate their family. I wanna do my job, and go home not milk the clock for 12 hours everyday.hotrod1653, Gearjammin' Penguin, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Lol we have a guy who will do his 11ish hour run then he’ll hang out at the yard talking to literally everyone on some days. Crazy, just go home lolGearjammin' Penguin and MACK E-6 Thank this.

He won’t last. If he does he’ll wind up being the one the gets catered to with doing drop and hooks all day long because he sucks so bad at running a route.
One bone I would pick though is the blocking 3 lanes to turn left. I’ve done that but personally it’s something I’ll go out of my to avoid, especially if there’s a traffic light nearby I could come out at. -
sadly, this is the entrance of a customer that’s a daily customer. It’s unavoidable it’s just how they designed tamiami trial. It’s like customers on US-27/41 you gotta blind side for some of them; it is what it is.
wait for a gap, and throw your arse into position. Six lanes of no one on us41 ain’t gonna happen.
I’m trying to get him to master the 45 degree back. With a 53ft day cab you can block 4 out of 6 lanes in a 45 and just back slowlyLast edited: Jan 12, 2026 at 3:30 AM
