Chocolate cake is hit or miss, depends on what else I consume with the cake, candy bars have no observed effect. Keep in mind, I don't make a habit of either as I'm pre-diabetic and trying to lose weight.

Blair, I get flare ups from time to time over the past 15 years or so too. It sucks. I've found a few things that trigger it. If I accidentally stub a toe weirdly that can trigger it. Sometimes I have no idea what triggers it though. Sausage patties or sausage links at breakfast those seem to trigger it. Bacon doesn't but sausage does. Red meats are bad for it. Alcohol will do it. I like whiskey but not to excess and not every week but I do like it. Sometimes that triggers it. There's a lot of different things that trigger it. I've had it in my toes, ankles and even my wrists. I've had it start in a toe and migrate to the ankle. As I'm sure you know it's always a miserable thing to wake up to when on the road out here and have that massive pain... makes it hard to do the job. At the end of the day it's mostly due to poor diet and lack of exercise but we like to eat what we eat.

I have found ONE thing that works REALLY well to quickly flush the purines out of my system. Tart red cherry juice. When you get a flare up drink a quart of the stuff as quickly as possible. I can down it in a couple of minutes. An hour or so later you'll be sitting on the toilet. It'll cleanse your system about like eating a mess of poke salet annie will lol. I promise within a few hours of that you'll start noticing relief. By the next day you'll be 100% pain free. It's an old home remedy and it works.

Make sure you get tart red cherry juice. Do not get the black cherry juice it's loaded up with more sugar and not as good for the problem as tart.

This stuff tastes pretty good but any of the cheaper stuff works just as well...

I’ve noticed in the past pork sausage would set it off. We get a whole hog raised locally, the sausage goes into links and is not seasoned, and it’s ok.

Store bought or restaurant pork sausage is a no go.

I’ve been hitting the tart cherry juice, and I’ll keep it on hand. You’ll see in my post the part about trying to find clinical trials about it.

Luckily I’ve only had it in the big toe joint - knees and elbows would be a bear. I never leave the house without a supply of colchicine and indomethacin.

I may take Chinas (and my doc)’s advice, and start a low dose allopurinol daily if I continue to battle it.

I didn't think food had an effect on gout victims, I see it does. I have a LOT of GI problems, but nothing like gout. Your descriptions of certain foods upset you, but not others, is a clear sign to me, we are being poisoned, slowly. Tomatoes,,,TURN ME INSIDE OUT, even so called "organic", same thing, yet a friend had cherry tomatoes in his garden, he said just try mine, guess what, no problems. I eat a lot of junk food because it seems to be the safest thing to eat.
    Oh, ( whispering) I don't think Chinatown is a real doctor,,,
