I got it early in my career when I was eating cold-cut sandwiches 5 of 5 days and TV dinners in the truck 4 out of 5 days and drinking canned iced tea and coke. I thought I had broken my left big toe. I got medicine for a few weeks, switched up my diet and started drinking water constantly. I think both TV dinners and sandwich meat use a lot of animal organ meat which is likely to cause gout. I don't drink. I've never had it since, but it is awful.
Sons Hero and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I have a freaky neighbor, who is into all kinds of natural meds, hey, she's pushing 80 and still looks great,,and she says cloves are a cure all, I'm sure they taste awful.
You wonder sometimes, if the cure is worse than the disease.

First time I had it I thought I'd broken a bone too -
Something I came across a while back said that of those that have an attack, 50% never have another one. The other 50% have recurring flares/attacks. -
I had a family member that was all about curing everything with supplements. When they got cancer it was over quickly for them. Taking supplements while having cancer is like pouring gasoline on a fire. Cancer is like a nutritional vacuum cleaner sucking up all of the nutrition, even starving the body to get it. They were diagnosed, and then kaput in weeks. The doctor hadn't seen a tumor that aggressive in his career and he was one of the top 5 experts in the country. There's somebody somewhere living to 100 on a diet of whiskey and cigarettes and someone else dying early on wheat grass and tofu.Last edited: Mar 10, 2026

Sorry to hear of the pain you are going through. I had gout for several months when i first started driving and it is the most painful thing I have ever gone through. A lot of folks are telling you to use this or that to cover it up, but it is best to stop consuming the thing that is causing it in the first place.
In my case it turned out to be ice tea I was getting from Loves. Since my company fueled from only them, I would fill up my cup a couple times a day since it was free. About a month after I started drinking there stuff the gout hit me in the left foot. Not the big toe, but the joints of the two smallest ones. I often fell down because it hurt so bad when flaring up even for just a few seconds.
I went to the internet to find what could cause this and black tea was listed as one of the main causes. I remember seeing hardened particles in my empty cup that the tea left behind. It hit me then that the loves tea i was drinking probably was causing this pain. So soon as i stopped the tea entirely, i had only one more flare up that was minor, maybe just 1/3 of the pain for a few seconds, and after that it was gone completely in a matter of a day. Ten years now and I never felt it since.
I do not drink alcohol, but I do eat lots of red meat and pork. At least 3/4 of a pound a day, often more. That does not cause any pain for me. It was the tea and nothing else.Sons Hero Thanks this. -
So what is gout? Like what does it feel like when it happens?

It used to be called "the disease of kings" because European kings historically ate rich diets, lots of meats, and suffered from gout but the poor common folk who didn't eat well never did. Inflammation in the joints. Excruciating pain. Worst pain ever. Maybe similar to arthritis? It's from an excessive build up of uric acid in the joints. If you get it in your big toe it hurts so bad you literally won't be able to walk. Putting a sock on never mind a shoe, pure agony. Even laying in bed a sheet laying on top of the inflamed toe hurts like hell. However it ails you or waylays you depends on whatever joint it affects whenever it hits. Like you can't bend a knee or an elbow without massive pain if it flares there. Or your ankle will hurt like hell. Or get it in your hand/wrist and can't make a fist to save your life. Staying well hydrated and avoiding certain foods is about all you can do.

Mine felt like I broke by big toe, where the joint between the end of foot and start of toe. I assumed that I had broke my big toe jumping from the truck instead of blacking down the steps. Crystals form in the joint between bones and those crystals cause great pain. Once I took off my boot, I could not lay a thin sheet over my toe without the worst pain I've felt. Gout can show up in any joint. It may vary from person to person. One thing that helps prevent it is to stay very hydrated. Many of us don't drink enough water but we drink coffee, soft drinks, every manner of sweet or energy drink, etc. Keeping well hydrated prevents from having the chemicals that concentrate and become crystals, think salt crystals, between your joins. I use salt crystal as something you can imagine, the crystal isn't actually salt.D.Tibbitt and rollin coal Thank this.
