A cold wind was moaning through the mountain passes, whipping sheets of snow in whirling streamers like herds of ghostly white horses. Like the phantom horses that legend told that came looking for the souls of fallen warriors. The cold got deeper with every wail.

On the icy roadway that twisted it's way among the grey peaks big trucks boomed along; each driver doing his best to find a path through the deepening gloom. Nobody noticed the broken guardrail.

Past the twisted steel and down the jumbled rocks lay the crumpled shape of what used to be a tractor trailer. Barely visible at the bottom of the wreck was what remained of the cab, all torn and shattered. From the driver's window reached a hand; a hand that moved, moved once more and then lay still..... forever more. The bloody hand clutched a small notebook.

In that notebook was a letter written in a shaky hand, stained with blood and teardrops. It read.....

    To My Wife,

Well, it looks like I've made my last mistake. I'm all busted up and I know I ain't got much time left. This is about all I can do for you now.

You're right, I ain't much of a husband. Never enough money and always having to scrape by. Always interfering with the order of your home when I was around. Always making things hard for you. Always.... well that don't matter now.

I know you don't believe me but I have always loved you. You were always my Angel. I'm sorry that wasn't enough. I'm sorry....

The pain's getting bad now hon and it's making it hard to write. Harder to see, getting darker. The insurance will bury whatever's left of me in a cheap box an pay off what's owed on the house with a bit left over. Chuck will give you a good price for my pickup an my tools an stuff. Sell whatever else for what you can get, wedding rings and such.

Oh God it hurts so much now, gotta stop. I love you Darlin an I hope you'll have a better life now. Oh....Dear God, please look after my Angel... oh!!!

    Goodby Angel, goodby.

Thanks. I sometimes do these little stories and some poetry. As a matter of fact I have several on our website, including a series about a trucker and his cat called Jake and Traveller. Sadly I can't post the link.

However, you can Google "Louisiana Plantations" and look for "Meme's Place" which is my wife's site. By going to "main index" you can find my stuff too.

Always a humbling thing remembering that sometimes we might not make it home from work...
