thanks! Yea I used to work as an Office Manager in a Chiropractic Office so insurance is a BIG THING with me. I looked up the insurance that Stevens offers and it is AWFUL! I would recommend it to anyone. Swift won't send hubby anything until closer until orientation date so I dont know the exact insurance carrier it is. However, when reading the benefits package online I could tell it was a good insurance plan. So he is really leaning towards Swift. He can reach .40cpm at Swift within 3-4yrs. With Stevens, to reach .40cpm he would have to work there for 15+yrs!!!
Now given unless the company is a wonderful company he is just getting the experience and then moving to another place to call home. If Swift treats him right and vice versa....he could end up calling them home. -
What OTHER place ???????
Where are these millions of other jobs to move up to ?????
Just sayin................ -
Never said millions....but there are other places out there. There are TONS of places that he can't apply to because they require experience. Am I saying they will be the best? No...but I am not looking up and/or asking opinions on those places until we cross that bridge. I would think anyone would be a fool to stay where they aren't making $, aren't being treated fairly if they are a hard-working employee, and so forth. I do think it is sad that other truckers make fun of the ones that may not work for what they consider a top notch company. That reminds me of the kids in my daughter's 2nd grade class. I am glad my husband has more respect for the road & the industry to where he would never treat someone like that.
If you put in the hardwork of looking for other companies and do the research you can find the good companies. Each company has a bad side but it is how you handle their negative aspects. What I consider bad may not be what you consider bad. To each their own.... But getting on here claiming there arent jobs kinda shows me slack on your part. I have a spreadsheet I put together for my husband and there are over 100 different companies that he can look at after experience. If you want something good....you gotta get off your butt and look for it. Not expect it to fall into your lap.
So thanks but no thanks for the negative attitude. -
If I was you, I'd get his but on the truckersreport to research this stuff. Getting information 2nd hand from a bunch of truckers is bad enough. Filtering it through more truckers, a computer, a website, then through a wife (not to say there is anything wrong with you... just remember those games played in school like telephone where everone in the class has to wisper to the next?) to give him information might be bad for his mental stability.
Now for my 2 cents worth (it's actually worthless but I like to pretend it's worth something)
I don't know of ONE company that's worth anything that actually goes out and looks for drivers. The best companies are ones that you go out and look for or you need a driver referal to get an application. So, since he's new and has a compromised driving record he or you should page through the posts about the different companies out there and what they require. Also your MVR will effect you but when it comes to truck driving there's alot of wieght placed on wether or not the infractions were in a CMV or even if they had a CDL when they got the infractions. As for me I was in the Marines and had a traffic Accident that cost about $15,000 worth of damage that was my fault. This was 8 months before I got my CDL and 2 months before I even thought about becoming a trucker. I got my start running FAC loads out of Rocky Mount, NC for Trans Am. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't my cup of tea cause I wanted to run the roads and they wanted me to go home for the holidays and because of this I sat in truck stops alot. I've heard from other trans am drivers that running out of the main terminal in Olathe, KS was a whole lot better than Rocky Mount, I didn't stick around long enough to find out because I lived outside that particular hiring area. Maybe he could look into them, I'm not sure what the hiring critera is, I run MCT out of sioux falls, SD. I like them and there's alot of owner ops here that he could Drive for. Best solution is he go out and look at whats there and no matter what company he goes to he better plan on at least 8 months preferably a year before going to another company. -
Thanks, I appreciate your feedback. He has gotten on here plenty of times and it made his head spin. LOL! I got on here for my own reasons so I could see what I could find. He isn't the best at searching for things and reading them from start to finish. Since I stay at home with the baby I get alot of time to do it when he's sleeping....so I thought I would do my own research. His 2 tickets were in our personal car and I was all on his butt about his driving. Then when he mentioned truck school I told him there was no way in he** I would let that happen unless he could prove that he could drive a car better. I did this for my peace of mind when it came to his safety as well as others. My philosophy is: if you cant drive safely in your car with or without your family.....there is no way your ### needs to be behind the wheel of a semi. Simply put. So he had to prove to me that he was taking it seriously. Ultimately he is his own man and can make his choices but I wouldnt support him if he went to school without respecting the road. He tried Trans Am and they sent him paperwork for checking his references. He called a week later and they said they decided on other people...so idk what happened.
He has a friend that is an owner operator and I told him to talk to him about stuff. He is steering him towards Western Express but plainly admits they jip you on $$. So to me...that friend isn't that reliable. I wish he could find someone to get a referral from but he wont get that until he gets in to a company and can prove himself. I told him he needed to go to truckstops around here and talk to some people. However...he wont do it. He's not a very outgoing person so i guess that's it. Idk. All I can do is make suggestions and what he does with it....is his own business. I just dont want him getting with a company that is going to make him foot the bill on everything as a company driver and then leave him stranded somewhere or just not work him. We cant afford that hit. I like stayin home with the kids especially since our son was a preemie but if he doesn't get miles I will probably look for a job to make sure we make ends meet.
What are FAC loads? Sorry i am new to this industry so I dont know all of the lingo. Is MCT the company you work for? I had him get books from the truckstops to help him look at other companies. Wherever he ends up...I told him to plan on being there 1-3yrs because if he just gets minimal exp and jumps to another place....he wont be viewed as reliable and it will lead them to think he is a job hopper. He doesnt need that at all....so I hope he takes my advice. -
When your "friend" talks about Jip money I think he's mis characterizing. Company's don't do this on purpose, it's just the nature of the beast. nothing in this world is perfect. companies calculate pay based on different milage programs. Actuall milages differ because nothings perfect. Even some companies "practical route miles" doesn't pay for everymile driven. It is what it is and I get irritated when new drivers complain about it. what's the difference of how many miles you drive if you're gonna net $300 for the run?
As far as FAC, that was a Broker that Trans Am took over. There sole existance was servicing MBM distributors. I had my wars with that fleet and that's why I ultimately left. I don't believe Trans Am said that... Trans Am is like any other large company... they rarely turn down applicants... like I said, I had a $15,000 accident 8 months before I worked there.
MCT is the company that I'm leased too. It's all owner op/ fleet owners. MCT doesn't own 1 truck... they only own trailers. fleet owners contract through MCT to fill there driver seats or they recruit and get MCT to approve there new hires. look, I like them alot... they've never done me wrong. but remember, this is comeing from a guy who's used to a little pain because that's what life in trucking is about. When I say "they've never done me wrong" I mean, they've always been honest and never lied to me. http://www.midwest-coast.com/ That's there website if you're interested in looking into it. I'm not sure what they do... sometimes they're hiring sometime not. sometimes they want students sometimes they don't. Sometimes you get a good truck sometimes it's a pile of excriment, all depends on fleet owner. If you call, let me know what they say... -
@fuelofire: thanks for that feedback. The "friend" isn't one of mine, I've personally never met the guy. My hubby went to school with him & he is now an o/o. He's given some feedback to my hubby but I told him he has to take it with a grain of salt like some/most of the stuff on here. He will never know the ins/outs of a company until he goes with them, and that's what I have told him. With Trans-Am....I'm not really sure what went down with that one. I thought it was odd they went thru all the trouble they did with him for the process just to say something like that....but I can't argue with him about it. He got the call while he was at school in the yard so I dunno. I question him on a lot of the companies he has spoke with. He seems to forget I have worked in HR and know certain things. He told me that one place wouldn't even tell him why he was turned down b/c it's against their policy & I called bs on that one. They don't have any liabilities with him so what does it matter if they tell him. However...I can only go so far with it. He knows I call bs on a lot of it & dont believe him on some of the stuff. But I'm not his mother and I won't hold his hand thru the process of being an adult. I help him the best I can as his wife, but I wont do all the work. If he picks a bad place...that's his issue not mine. He knows this.
So you are an I/C? He would love to get into an o/o situation but I dont think that's the best thing to do right off the bat. There are so many costs associated with it I would be afraid he'd get in over his head & then my kids would suffer due to $$ coming in. To be quite frank....the trucking industry scares me because there are so many "unknown" things that could come up. But that's why I choose not to work in it. I will stick to my Nursing Background....suits me just fine
He's a big boy so he will just have to take the fall on his own...if there is one.
You have given a lot of information & I do appreciate it! I will pass along the information you gave to him & let ya know if he calls and what they say. I dont make employment calls for him. Not my place to do that. I'm lucky to get free time to get on here to research! The baby keeps me on my toes thru the day! -
Stevens runs alot of miles. If Swift is paying .40 a mile but you aren't going anywhere where does that leave you. There are over 450,000 trucking companies in the US. You are just going for the easy pickings. You couldn't pay $5.00 a mile to deal with these guys! There are plenty of other companies that will hire your husband you guys just have to do your homework. Don't you find it a little strange that a company has to spend millions of dollars in advertising to get you to work there? There's a red flag in case you guys are color blind! This is not advice from a disgruntled driver, just someone who has seen these companies constantly take advantage of people who are new to the industry. Do as you wish with this info but I guarantee you will remember this post down the road!
