Which terminal are you out of plz? I just finished orientation yesterday and our safety person said the driver should not have been charged for this. But he was ordered by DOT in Oregon to take 10hrs in the sleeper. He had just done 11hrs in the sleeper. I really hope everyone gets on the same page soon. We were also told by safety that if you are on your shipper/consignee property you are on duty not driving until you are off their property. No matter if you have to wait hours for them to unload ya, with the idea in mind that you can go over your 14 when you are on duty not driving, any amount of hours. You just can't go over the 14 driving.

So, if you're at a truckstop perusing online on your laptop in the cab, you're on duty? DOT would have a field day with my logs then if that's the case.

For some reason, I'm reminded of the threads about how reading a QC message is on duty and must be logged as such.

Scanning paperwork is work, just as reading a QC message is work. It is related to my job as a trucker, therefore it is work. And Transflo receipts do have the time on them, so there is proof of when they were scanned.

Am I going to change my habits and never again scan paperwork while on a break? I doubt it. I still read any QC messages that come through on my break (unless I'm sleeping).

The fact remains that if we drivers log every bit of work as on-duty-not-driving, we would have very little time left to actually drive. And as we all know, driving is what we get paid for.

I'm fairly honest with my log book (if a drop and hook takes me 45 minutes, then I log 45 minutes) but I'm not going to log on duty if I'm in the sleeper reading a book while backed into a loading dock.

change your habbits, and you'll end up with CHANGE in your wallet. Dunno about yours, but mine dont hold change very well. It ends up falling out at the top when i turn it upside down to put it in my back pocket.

So, if i'm at the shipper.....regardless if i'm waiting to be unloaded...its line 4? Even if i'm in the sleeper? So i have 65 mi to run in the morning, sitting at the Gary terminal. I start my clock, get to the shipper, and they tell me "you're late" (even though i'm not) and that i'm going to be a "work in". I get there at say....9a. and they dont start to unload me till 6p...and they're not done with me till 9p (and no you will get screwed out of detention pay, so dont bother asking for it....because they'll just say you were late)....so for 12 hrs, i'm suposed to show on line 4? is that what you're saying?? HAHAHAHAHAH.....yeah, not. The whole purpose of the sleeper is so that you can go back there, and uh.....SLEEP...or rest.....so you can go to line 2. you CAN be in the sleeper, on line 2 while on the customers property.

oh, and i'm based out of Edwardsville. If you want to tattle on me, please talk to the man who does our log class...Mark Smith. Then talk to our safety director Pam....and while you're at it....talk to the terminal manager, Tom Frame. Oh...and while you're calling around, the janitor's name is Fred.

Been doing this for 2 yrs. and never once got a log violation for the way i log at shippers. They get 15 min. on line 4...and thats it. Don't care if i drop and hook....dont care if i'm told to back into a door, drop and bobtail to a designated parking area on their property. You go ahead and log 14 hrs on line 4....run out of 70 hr clock a day and a half earlier than i would, and watch me come and go 2-3x making money, while your truck sits parked in the bobtail row, and you're in the smokers area puffin' thru 3 packs of cigarettes an hour. (eh...maybe you're not a smoker....i'm just throwin' it out there that 'maybe') LOL.

oh and P.S. sounds to me that DOT guy who made another driver take ANOTHER 10 hr break, just had a hair up his/her az, or wanted to play their 'power trip' card, and has NOTHING to do with swift or what they'd catch on log audits.

The way the game is played is that Swift informs its drivers on the rules...that way you can never say they didn't inform you of how to log. (ever wonder about all those forms you signed during orentation that you never really read..ok..I didn't but maybe some of you logged line 4 and spent 4 hours reading them...lol) anyway...they have proof that they have trained you according to DOT standards. It is up to you when you get on that truck how you do your job. Sort of like an IRS audit...you only get caught if you start raising red flags. Yes they have time stamps all over your day...tolls...trans flo..smacros...fuel...understanding the game and then using your brain is what makes Swift money and me money...plus your DM will be happy that you can get the job done....just sayin

Well there's your problem. If they could figure out how to make trucks illegal with out starving to death Oregon would.

I talked with my DM about using the qualcomm while logged off duty or in the sleeper and she said they don't watch it that close. I asked because my mentor told me to never read the messages unless I was within my 14 because they would 'know' that I had read the message(s) and would get dinged for a log violation. He told me if it beeps call the terminal and ask what they want. DM said use the qualcomm we aren't out to hang anyone for logs based on that.

guess what, pally......picking up the cell and calling WORK.......you might as well just have picked up the qualcomm....cause if everyone wants to get picky, you're still doing 'work' by 'calling work' and 'talking work'......so you're really not using some hidden loophole or somethin'........

    just sayin'

where did you stop in des moines? Loves/Pilot just off I-35 or Bosselman's off exit 142 ?

also got to thinkin'.......say i drive straight from shipper to the final. Park at a wal-mart that is no more than a minute or two drive....am i actually suposed to log that when i wake up in the morning, and drive over there? if it dont take more than 7 minutes, you dont have to log it. So if i'm walking into a truck stop to grab a meal, or take a 10-200....then stand in line and get my paperwork scanned in less than 2-3 minutes....i'm suposed to log 2-3 min. as 15 min? i think not.
