While I was in Waxahatchie the other day my truck was in the shop because of an exhaust leak found during a parked regeneration. I was given a room at the Days Inn hotel a few exits down.
The next morning I boarded the hotel shuttle which was packed so I managed to squeeze through the crowded shuttle to a seat in the very back row. We headed out towards my company's terminal. I was sitting in the back row thinking "hmm, bunch of people. must be orientation day or something."
We pull up to the terminal and only one person gets out.
"Great, now what? There's no way I can get out past these people again." and shortly after the one guy got out the van took off again.
"okay, looks like I'm going for a ride."
So I sat in the van figuring they were going to Walmart or something. We pass the Walmart so I started thinking "Oh geez, where is this van headed?"
We pull off on another exit and take some back roads and pull into the Swift terminal. Everyone gets out, including the van driver. By the time the van clears out enough for me to get out from the very back, the driver is nowhere to be found.
Ok....now what?
Here I am..at the Swift terminal. I'm not a Swift employee. I have no idea if the van driver is done for a few hours or if/when he's coming back.
What would you have done?
I personally didn't feel I had the right to walk inside the Swift terminal to have a look around. I did peek inside the door and saw A LOT of people inside, but I stayed outside fighting the bitter cold and wind. Saw people coming and going but the main thing I remember is "wow, there are a lot of people inside there."
Eventually the van driver came back outside carrying two styrofoam containers. He told me I should have done what he did and gone inside to the cafeteria and get something to eat. I just felt wrong doing that.
What would you have done if in a similar situation?
(plus I was worried if anyone (*ahem* Injun) would recognize me)
Ok...now what?

I would have at least asked the driver what the scoop was a found a bathroom.......maybe cruise into the drivers lounge talk some smack.........LOL....no I probably would have done the same thing you did.......but talking some smack in the lounge coulda been fun

aw come on you could pretended to be a swifty super trucker just gettin back from a 4000 mile week talking about gettin 40 cpm and you've only been with them a week oh and you got a fast truck too.....

just kidding sequoia...you did the right thing...but I might have waited inside where it was warmer

I considered it, but I didn't want to lose sight of the courtesy van. If that thing left without me in it, then I would have really been in an interesting situation. I'd probably have to then go talk to recruiting, fill out an application....
-

....yeah that would fly really well
-
Well, if the driver happened to leave the keys in the van. . .

Nah, you don't need that kind of trouble. You did the right thing.

Do what I did last year when I was pulling a CR England trailer around the country for 5 weeks....Drive their drivers nuts by spreading rumors and telling out right lies!
I had a bunch of their drivers convinced that CR was buying a bunch of ungoverned black W900L's and giving them to drivers with more than a year!
I had some of them believing that I was a renegade "fleece Operator" that had my truck turned up and just said #### it!
I hated the reefer work but I had a great time messing with CRE's drivers and "fleece operators".
