Okay, so I bought a used truck from Crete Carrier.

I paid $36,200 for a then-4 year old Century with 450k miles and an APU. That includes the down payment and financed amount. It came with new tires all the way around, a free brake job anytime in the first 2 years, and Crete paid for the extended engine warranty from Detroit (not sure what that costs, but I think it's over $3k).

Without the APU it would have been $32,700. It still would have come with the new tires, free brakes, and extended engine warranty.

I shopped around for over a year, looking at listings on eBay Motors, TruckPaper.com, SelecTrucks, local newspaper ads, and 3 Freightliner dealers and never found a deal that was significantly better (and none that even came close once financing was factored in).

If your friend finds a better deal, my advice would be to be on it like a duck on a june bug.

Check out SelecTrucks of Georgia, stock # V1105. That's an old Crete fleet truck, with no APU. They're asking $39,900. Let's say they'll come down 15% with lots of haggling. That brings it to $33,915. Does the truck come with new tires, a free brake job, and a free extended engine warranty? I doubt it. The listing also doesn't mention how many miles that truck has on it. I would guess at least 530,000

So, if you are finding better deals, please share the details! If I can pick up trucks like what I got, but pay $25k-$30k each, I'll stop driving this truck and switch to buying and selling them for a living, because I can sell them for $35k all day long!

Your original post on this subject did not give any specific price quote. Only % above market value. You are correct that $40k is 150% higher than $25k, just as I pointed out in my reply.

Looking at THE TRUCK PAPER reveals that '06 - '07 Centry Class are indeed priced in the $35k +/- range. So I think you and your friend should do more CURRENT price shopping.

    Spunky out.

RedBeard, Thanks for the info on what they provide. That will give him a little something to compare altthough I think he is done with Shafer. This whole thing put a very bad taste in his mouth.

The price you paid for what the had then seemed fair. It seems that maybe they are seeing they can get a little more from the driver these days with miles increasing and people feeling more comfortble. I know the report coming out of the CTA (that Crete is a part of) states that L/P programs are picking up and the drop rate is down. Plus side for you guys, Crete has one of the highest completion rates.

However, if I wanted I could go to truck paper and find an '06 Century for $45k.

But, I can also go to the truck paper and find over 25 under $30k. Selcet truck does not impress me. Not over the top on price but you are looking at the higher end.

Anyway, wish he could get online and provide you with more details. His mother board fried a couple months ago and he has been on a mission to save he 10k so that he buy a truck.

I just pointed out the first 06 Century without fairings that came up on their website, but I'll look around when I get some time and see if I can find a 4 year old, 450k mile, non-skirted Century with APU for less than I paid (or without for under $33k). I somehow doubt they're just hanging from the trees, but I'll do my due diligence before I call BS.

I just took a peek at the truckpaperdotcom...the '06 naked tank former Crete's avg $28-32k, the '07s were from $38-40k...so Crete's price isn't too far off.

And by the way, not to start this debate again, it's a straight out purchase, not a lease purchase..if you call this a lease-purchase...you may as well call buying a truck from Selectrucks or Arrow sales(or JD's pawn and gun, bait/tackle, pharmaceutical outlet, adult gift store, cigarette outlet and truck sales) a lease purchase...since you are doing essentially the same thing...purchasing a truck, and leasing your business (truck and driving) to a company... the only difference is since Crete financed the purchase(and are taking the risk of your success or failure) they require you to stay here... with outside financing you have to either have your own authority, or have a lease agreement with a company before most will finance you...I've done both...1st truck was through Arnold Transportation...the second through Freightliner...Both had restrictions and qualifications for financing.

In fairness, we are talking about 5+ year old Century's with 500k+ miles. The price you paid and years would compare today to an '07 and that price is fair. Actually better than fair.

I have a question - why does your company buy these trucks without the fairings? At a truck show talking to the International rep I was asking him about prices with and without fairings. He said that they only sell them without to fleet accounts.

Our trucks are selling like hotcakes...When I was up there in Lincoln, there was a bunch of red trucks, cleaned and polished, and re-decaled (including truck number) to another company. And there was one driver that had just dropped off his truck because it was sold out from under him...and he was unloading his stuff into a rental car to drive to the K/C terminal to pick up a used truck...and he wasn't too happy about it since he ran hard enough over the last 3 or 4 years to deserve a new one.

I don't know for sure, but a quick guess would be for easier access under the truck, and to give the drivers one less thing to screw up and break ;-)

owning a truck and leasing to a company IS being an owner operator.

having your authority and being "independant" makes you a carrier. thats why they call it Motor Carrier Authority
