I understand the splitting of the driving times on either side of the 8 and 2 hour splits cannot add up to more than 11 hours. But doesn't the driver get a brand new 14 hour period after the completion of the second part of the break that completes the 10 hours off?
If I drove 5 hours in 7 hours of my 14, took a break (not to confuse by saying 8 or 2) and drove 6 in the remaining 7, then took the next break adding up to 10 hours off, do I only get 7 hours to drive 5?
Is that one of those machines that cuts up the granite slabs for kitchen counters? -
Read the FMCSA's "Interstate Truck Driver's Guide to Hours of Service", pp. 11-12:

I too, have been wondering how to do this;why is it,everything I "put off" in my life, sooner or later bites me in the ###?
scottied67 Thanks this. -
No. Neither te 11 nor the 14 are reset, even after completion of the second half of the split. Time is recomputed for both from the end of the last qualifying break. It's confusing until it's placed into practice a few times.
The only way to reset either the 11 or the 14 is to take a 10.scottied67, inkeper and Bumpy Thank this. -

Thank you. Some how I didn't know to split the 14 evenly, probably because they emphasize and concentrate so heavily on not going over the 11 rather than discussing the 14 being evenly split before and after each break as well. -
Take a few log sheets and draw out the examples from the FMCSA guide. As Injun says, it will all start to make sense.
-
OK thanks! I did that and it makes sense now. It is after the 8 hour sleeper break where the new 14 recalculation point is, not necessarily always after the second break as I had believed. -
No, Scottie. Hours between the 2 and 8 still count against your 14. The 8 does not.
